Ist Ist - Light A Bigger Fire

Zuletzt erreichten Adam Houghton (Gesang, Gitarre), Joel Kay (Schlagzeug), Andy Keating (Bass) und Mat Peters (Synthesizer) mit ihrem dritten Album „Protagonists“ (2023) bei Platten vor Gericht einen Punktedurchschnitt von 7,750 und damit den 28. Platz in unserer Jahresendabrechnung. 

Wenn man den Albumtitel „Light A Bigger Fire“ darauf übertragen möchte, sollen es wohl nun die Top 20 werden.

Das Quartett bewegt sich weiterhin zwischen düsterem Post-Punk und energetischem Indierock und dürfte bei Fans von White Lies, Slow Readers Club oder Editors offene Türen einrennen. Auf „Light A Bigger Fire“ gehen sie nun einen Schritt weiter und könnten die kontinuierlich steigende Popularität der Band weiter anheizen. Das vierte Album von Ist Ist kommt mit großen Melodien und noch größerem Sound daher. Am besten nachzuhören auf „Lost My Shadow“, „The Kiss“ oder „Dreams Aren’t Enough“. 

Möglicherweise hat ihr Produzent Joe Cross (The Courtenners, Hurts), der auch schon als Songwriter mit Lana Del Rey, Zoot Woman oder La Roux arbeitete, ihnen die Tore für das Popradio (beispielsweise die von Keyboard-Klängen dominierten „Repercussions“ und „I Can’t Wait For You“) aber auch große Festivalbühnen aufgestoßen.

Der recht monotone und irgendwie gewollt tief wirkende Gesang von Adam Houghton schiebt Ist Ist für mich persönlich immer etwas in Richtung Gothic Rock. Dass es auch etwas abwechslungsreicher geht, zeigen der Refrain von „I Can’t Wait For You“ und das abschließende, als Piano-Ballade beginnende und dramatisch endende „Ghost“.

IST IST’s last album, ‘Protagonists’, was a big step on this journey, but ‘Light A Bigger Fire’ places them in the heart of the modern pop world. Songs of heartbreak have never sounded so radio friendly without losing their introspective heart and soul. All the band’s classic hallmarks are still in place, from the melancholic bass lines, to the washes of atmospheric keyboards shackled to the tightest drums, the chiming guitar shapes and the baritone vocals and yet reshaped to reach out from beyond the cult.

There is a synth indulgence heard through Light a Bigger Fire which frees the band up that little bit more. A swinging sound that gears Ist Ist up as a collection of musicians with a Future Islands mindset to them. Intimate detail, and out-there instrumentals provide such a joy to hear. Confident work but, crucially, with this growth in interest, they have not lost what made their previous works so intimate. This bigger fire is a broader one, and there is no harm in hearing their wider sound at work. Songs like Dreams Aren’t Enough get to grips with this new tone well and there is much to love about Light a Bigger Fire. Lyrically charmed works, moments of impotence in the face of fear and whining guitar work solidify this numbness through trauma.
