Palace - Shoals
Lead single “Gravity” dabbles in shoegaze soundscapes whilst exploring existentialism through philosophical lamentations. The boldness of the track juxtaposes the narrative of cosmological insignificance, as profound self-realisation oozes in sultry vocals. Backed by funky basslines and smooth, rolling percussive notes, the track hits an explosive climax before delving back into bluesy beats.Stripped-back blues influence are prevalent throughout - with the suave elegance of “Killer Whale” Palace ruminate on time, where in “Lover (Don’t Let Me Down)”, we see the four-piece experiment with tales of the heart. With “Where Sky Becomes Sea”, Palace round off their journey with soft and woozy instrumentation as the LP slowly tapers to a close with layered harmonies and scattered vocal intonations. With this album, Palace have offered a spiritual voyage through the fluctuations of life, and the uncertainty that holds its hand. If Shoals is anything to go by, Palace will be filling stadiums before too long.
The glassier tracks float freely through; ‘Gravity’ ironically spirals out into the atmosphere with pining guitar rings dancing under vocalist Leo Wyndham’s languishing passages, while album coda ‘Where Sky Becomes Sea’ brings us down neatly to solid ground. Cadence is established on ‘Fade’ and is not matched again in the project, but deftly exhibits the capability of Palace to mobilise their intensity into different shades. ‘Shoals’ suffuses a sense of somnambulism, where Leo’s longing cries fill expanses of sonically rich moments, splashed with reverb-heavy chord progressions and speculative melodies. A more pure and intense sound, less manufactured and acutely heartfelt.(DIY)

Miles Kane - Change The Show
Opening track ‘Tears Are Falling’ sets the tone and alludes to his penchant for theatrics ‘...Tired of breaking all the rules’. Talking of breaking the rules, Miles provides commentary and his insights on politics in the title track which was written while watching the news one morning, on the sofa after being continuously disenchanted by the injustice and negativity that surrounds political agenda. One of the standout tracks ‘Nothing’s Ever Gonna Be Good Enough’ - which is a duet with the exemplary Corinne Bailey Rae - is a delightful, 60s inspired track that will get everyone on the dancefloor. If you are looking for ‘all the feels’ on a cold winter’s morning, ‘Change The Show’ will warm the cockles of your heart and make you yearn for the carefree and hazy festival days of summer.(Clash)
The main claim for progression on ‘Change The Show’ is that there’s a lot going on. A spoken-word section from Lily Savage (comedian Paul O’Grady’s former drag persona) kicks off ‘Don’t Let It Get You Down’, and soon enough, a flurry of hip-shaking percussion rises like a tornado in slow motion, promising a build into a much-needed release. Then, swerving the opposite way, it pales back to a series of subdued group harmonies. It’s almost as though Kane is dangling the carrot, teasing some sort of breakthrough moment that never arrives. There’s no shame in concise tunes that bop likably along to big choruses and positive affirmations (here, Kane is “only looking for solutions”), but this is music driven by personality rather than innovation. Similarly, ‘See Ya When I See Ya’ is the type of catchy indie stomper that Kane is a master at – but 11 years into his solo career, it all sounds a bit too familiar.(NME)

Kids On A Crime Spree - Fall In Love Not In Line
Kids’ music goes over like ephemeral vignettes—polaroids of your parents with their friends, a Primitives cassette stuck in the deck of your friend’s car, a wobbly home video that sputters and blurs into a 49ers home game. Familiar, rose-tinted, revelatory. Never, it seems, has so much hassle gone into creating something that sounds this inadvertent.
"Karl Kardel Building," which opens the album, cribs from The Crystals' "Then He Kissed Me" -- but Kids of a Crime Spree remain superior makers of this style of indiepop, fusing classic hooks and classic fuzz with buckets of reverb. It's a formula that, when done right, is as satisfying as the original Wall of Sound. Hernandez, along with drummer Becky Barron, and guitarist Bill Evans, do it very right. Most songs run around 2:20 and pack in multiple hooks in each one. The album races by and if you're like me, you'll let it repeat three times before realizing it. It's a perfect dose of pop, though let's hope we don't have to wait another eight years for another 22 minutes.

Aurora - The Gods We Can Touch

Passt also.
Plaintive, introspective and pondering, Rift – the third studio record from Icelandic duo Bergur Þórisson and Pétur Jónsson – is a delicate collection of instrumental post-rock that calls to mind the gentler aspects of 65 Days of Static or a more ornamental Explosions in the Sky. The pair of multi-instrumentalists weave an impressive soundscape of chilly, expansive tones to create the audio equivalent of a snowy mirage.Rift, meaning to split or to break, seems to address an almost edge of the world landscape; the Reykjavik peninsulas, coves and islands where their studio is located is embodied in musing titles such as “rest”, “mist”, “solaris” and “fall” – all lower-case titles, as though whispering their presence. IV is a mournful, minor piano ballad that somehow evokes both the in-studio pressing of pedals and keys and something vastly more cinematic.

Elvis Costello & The Imposters - The Boy Named If

Orlando Weeks - Hop Up
His simplistic lyrics and buoyant melodies allow space for unexpected joy, even though Weeks has mentioned that the delightfully named “Big Skies Silly Faces” was loosely inspired by his own inner critic, and “the very English absurdity of making the most of a situation. The desperation for any potential silver lining.”There’s nothing about Hop Up that feels desperate though. It blossomed from a desire to acknowledge the simple pleasure of living in the moment, and for Weeks in particular, that means taking full and immeasurable pride in parenthood. A time capsule of love and a wonderful piece of musical heritage for his son Tomo, as well as an optimistic set of alt-pop lullabies to dream along to, Hop Up lives up to its buoyant name, carefree, poignant and a tonic of testing times.
As a whole, ‘Hop Up’ sounds undeniably warmer, more open-hearted and relaxed than he has ever been on record. This is an album about embracing the hopefulness of new life and striving to share Weeks’ singular, miraculous happiness with anyone who might be dragging their feet, stumbling upon the songs with little excitement about a currently dreary day-to-day. You finish this collection feeling lighter, a little more optimistic about what the world has to offer.(NME)

The Lumineers - Brightside
Radio". Aha, noch mal "Big Shot". Scheinen gute, griffige Songs zu sein. Sogar nebenbei.

Cat Power - Covers
They are all heavy songs, and you’d imagine no less from Cat Power. And they are all beautiful and raw and acoustic guitar heavy, as you’d imagine from Cat Power as well. Anyone who is already a Cat Power fan, I think, will thrill at this collection of songs and this look into Marshall’s soul. She’s not in this to cash in on other people’s creations or introduce her listeners to artists she thinks needs exposure, it is clear, but simply to give a window into her soul. This could have been a “songs I wish I wrote” sort of album, and it’s a delight to see what songs she picks. All of these songs, if you didn’t know they were covers, could certainly have been written from her own desperate and empowered pen. But her covers are now the world’s to hear. Another side to Chan Marshall, I’m glad I’ve seen.

Laura-Mary Carter - Town Called Nothing

Blood Red Shoes - Ghosts On Tape
Both ethereal and otherworldly, yet sometimes heavy as hell, this a record that seems to emanate from another dimension and they don’t come more phantasmal than opening track ‘Comply’. With a haunting piano motif, it’s akin to a fishing hook in the cheek and you have no choice but to obey its irretractable pull as layers of glacial synths entomb the listener and make songs like ‘Give Up’ and ‘Sucker’ the very epitome of gothic coldness. The lyricism, told from the perspective of outsiders and the ostracised, is equally disconcerting and the two combine to create an uneasy (though not unpleasant) experience. However, Ghosts On Tape is a strangely therapeutic listen and by the time we hit final song ‘Four Two Seven’ and the words “I’m scared to let go, it hurts so comfortable” we’re left with the feeling that certain evil spirits have been exorcised.
