The Voidz - Like All Before You

Es ist zum Heulen: Nach dem kurzen instrumentalen Opener „Overture“ (klingt wie ein Werk von Giorgio Moroder zu den Olympischen Spiele in Los Angeles von 1984) folgt „Square Wave“ und der Gesang von Julian Casablancas wird komplett vom Vocoder geschrottet. Als würden die Olsen Brothers zu einem New Order/Cure-Lied singen, das aus dem Lautsprecher eines billig Handys erschallt! 

Julian Casablancas? Ja, aus Julian Casablancas & The Voidz wurden mittlerweile The Voidz und wenn es darum gibt, weniger Alben zu verkaufen, dann war dieser Schachzug ein erfolgreicher: Das Debütalbum (noch mit dem Hinweis auf Julian Casablancas versehen) „Tyranny“ (2014) landete auf Platz 39 in den USA und Rang 111 im UK, für „Virtue“ (2018) (ohne Casablancas-Erwähnung) ist nur noch ein Platz 151 in den USA belegt. 

„Like All Before You“ ist also das dritte Album der Band und der nächste Song trägt den Titel „Prophecy Of The Dragon“ und dieser ist ein seltsames Sammelsurium aus Heavy-Gitarren-Riff, verträumtem Gesang, Videospiel-Gefiepse, 70ies Gitarrensolo, sanften Keyboard-Kaskaden, Vocoder-Einsatz und Geschrei. Das muss wohl als Experimental Rock-Band so sein. 

Diesem Ansatz bleiben Julian Casablancas (Gesang), Jeramy "Beardo" Gritter (Gitarre, Keyboards), Amir Yaghmai (Gitarre, Keyboards), Jacob "Jake" Bercovici (Bass, Keyboards), Alex Carapetis (Schlagzeug)und Jeff Kite (Keyboards) auch auf den noch folgenden 7 Songs treu. 

Gensau so der Sabotage der eigenen Punkteausbeute bei Platten vor Gericht (Vocoder und billig Produktion) sowie der Chartplatzierungen, denn „Like All Before You“ ist bereits digital erschienen und kommt erst Mitte Oktober als physische Veröffentlichung (CD, LP (red marble Vinyl, blue Vinyl)). Bei Metacritic stehen aktuell lediglich 61/100 Punkte für das Album zu Buche.

 

Variety remains the album’s undeniable strength, each track sounds instantly recognisable and reveals its own unique identity in respect of genre, style and beat. 

Take a song like the pulsating ‘Square Wave’, where basslines reminiscent of New Order outline the melody. Nicely enticing, it makes no attempts to hide the need to test a different idea. The vocals are given a robotic treatment and the pace is fast and demanding. 

Meanwhile, a raw juncture such as ‘Prophecy Of The Dragon’ uses different instrumental tricks, infectious hi-hats begin the affair before abrasive metal guitars interrupt to fire things up, and keep them heated. 

Elsewhere, there is the dream-like sonics of ‘Perseverance–1C2S’, a scenario that sees synth and guitar solos transport the listener to a distant place, a trippy moment before the sci-fi technology of ‘All the Same’ is heard. 

‘Like All Before You’ is a delightfully eclectic effort that never fails to startle, and it makes sense to continue following Julian Casablancas on this astonishing journey. 

An illustrious tour de force, this is experimental music that balances what’s classic, classy and cool.
