Zweimal standen Ist Ist mit einer ihrer Platten hier vor Gericht, zweimal konnten sie sich in unseren Top 30 platzieren: Los ging es 2023 mit „Protagonists“, das 7,750 Punkte sammeln und sich Rang 28 sichern konnte. Bereits im folgenden Jahr schloss sich „Light A Bigger Fire“ an und erreichte mit ebenfalls 7,750 Punkten Platz 26. Vielleicht sollten wir also über „Dagger“, insgesamt das fünfte Album der Band, gar nicht zu Gericht sitzen, sondern direkt 7,750 Punkte als Urteil eintragen und abwarten, wo man sich am Ende des Jahres mit dieser Wertung einreiht.
Oder würden sich die Plattenrichter vielleicht einmal eine Neuerung im Sound des Quartetts aus Greater Manchester wünschen? Denn Adam Houghton (Gesang, Gitarre), Mat Peters (Gitarre, Synthesizer, Keyboards), Andy Keating (Bass) und Joel Kay (Schlagzeuger) setzen zusammen mit ihrem Produzenten Joseph Cross (Hurts, Lana Del Rey, Courteeners) den eingeschlagenen Weg konsequent fort: Düsterer, energetischer Post-Punk-Sound, der aber mit mehr elektronischen Klängen ausgestattet wurde („I Am The Fear“, „Encouragement“). Das ruhige und atmosphärische „Song For Someone“ sticht nicht nur in dieser Hinsicht besonders aus den 10 Songs hervor. In einer Playliste gehören Ist Ist also weiterhin irgendwo zwischen Joy Division, White Lies und The Slow Readers Club.

Dagger starts with its lead single I Am The Fear, a big bold slab of electronic rock that laid down a marker and a statement of intent that Ist Ist know their strengths and play to them. Makes No Difference and Warning Signs possess the anthemic qualities to fill academies and arenas with hook lines that it’s almost impossible to resist, songs that barge into your conscience and refuse to budge.Burning might lack a killer chorus, but it doesn’t need one, it possesses a restless spirit, bulldozing guitars that sound big and ambitious and which hit the mark. The Echo touches back on the electronic vibe of the opener, a soaring monster full of echoing vocals and a chorus that you can see coming a mile off but which still lifts you off your feet.
