Jeder Glockenschlag, jede Banjomelodie ist genau richtig, hier wird nirgends auf die Tränendrüse gedrückt. Hier ist Melancholie eine Tugend, die es schafft aus folkigen Miniaturen mit Hilfe von symphonischen Elementen epische Songs entstehen zu lassen. "The Sleeper" ist wie ein Soundtrack zu einer Liebesgeschichte, deren Ende offen ist.

The Leisure Society gelingt eine beeindruckende Opulenz, die jedoch nie von Kronleuchtern, sondern immer von Kerzenschein erleuchtet wird. Dabei präsentiert sich das Septett als ebenso stilsicher wie traditionsbewusst: "A short weekend begins with longing" ist ein Großcousin von Harry Nilssons "Everybody's talking" und gönnt sich auch noch eine Wahlverwandtschaft mit "Mrs. Robinson", während das filmisch anmutende "We were wasted" Nick Drakes "River man" die Ehre erweist. Baden geht Songwriter Hemming mit seiner Referenzfreundlichkeit aber keineswegs - dafür ist er viel zu talentiert. Jedes seiner Lieder ist ein Unikat, auch wenn die Arrangements auf Albumlänge noch einen winzigen Hauch mehr Vielfalt vertragen hätten. Am interessantesten ist die Begleitung zu "The darkest place I know": Kalimba, Ukulele, Glockenspiel. Noch mehr ins Ohr gehen allerdings "Save it for someone who cares" und "A matter of time", zwei wahrlich grandiose 60s-Pop-Perlen. "Here's another name to add to your collection / She lacks in desire what I lack in direction", singt Hemming da. Glatt gelogen. Er weiß nämlich sehr gut, wo's langgeht - und zwar mit traumwandlerischer Sicherheit.

Martha Wainwright - Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris: Martha Wainwright’s Piaf Record

Bislang hatte ich Martha Wainwright der Schublade “Frau singt Folk / Pop / Rock” zugeordnet. Entsprechend desinteressiert stand ich ihrer Musik gegenüber. Und obwohl ich mich nie intensiv mit Edith Piaf oder ihren über 200 Songs befasst habe, interessierte mich Martha Wainwrights Album mit ihren Interpretationen einer Auswahl unbekannterer Songs des Spatzes von Paris.

Martha Wainwright stammt aus Montreal. Daher erfüllt sie mindestens eine Qualifikation, welche eine Musikerin mitbringen sollte, die sich an Edith Piafs Songs herantraut: Sie spricht französisch. Musik sollte Martha auch im Blut liegen, sind doch ihre Eltern Musiker und auch ihr Bruder Rufus hat sein Talent schon unter Beweis gestellt. Vielleicht befähigen sie ja diese Voraussetzungen, ein solch ambitioniertes Vorhaben zu meistern.

Das Album wurde während drei ihrer Auftritte im New Yorker Dixon Place Theatre im Juni 2009 aufgezeichnet. Zwei Sachen machte Martha auf jeden Fall richtig: Sie wählte nicht die “Hits” der Piaf und sie trifft m. E. einen guten Mittelweg zwischen Neuinterpretation und Huldigung der Originale. Während diese zu einem großen Teil von der Traurigkeit der Piaf lebten, spielt Martha Wainwright mit einer relativen Leichtigkeit. So eignen sich die Songs nicht zur Untermalung trister französischer Filme sondern zur Unterhaltung der Hörer. Vielleicht stellt “Sans Fusils, Ni Souliers, A Paris” sogar eine Alternative zu Weihnachtsliedern während des Familienfestes dar: Mindestens zwei Generationen sollten sich mit diesem Album anfreunden können und irgendwie besinnlich klingt es auch.

93 Million Miles From The Sun - 93 Million Miles From The Sun

Thank heavens for small mercies then, as 93 Million Miles From The Sun not only manage to dampen stereotypes, but their self-produced, self-titled debut long player could (whisper it) just be one of 2009's most exquisite offerings on the album front. Combining layered, textured guitars over an array of effects and choral vocals, 93 Million Miles From The Sun is one of those records that, while evoking memories of the likes of Slowdive in their heyday or even a more sonically enhanced Maps, stands tall and proud in its own right due to the dazzling range of variation across its thirteen tracks. Another key element of 93 Million Miles From The Sun's extensive make-up is that not only do they express a desire to take their sonic experimentation one step further, but they also never lose sight of the fact that beneath all the reverb and delay lay actual songs that would sound just as affecting stripped down.

Sam Isaac - Bears

im übrigen schade, dass ihr nicht Sam Isaac rezensiert habt dieses jahr. bitte reinhören. ich würds ja gern woanders kundtun, aber ich weiß nicht wo

Some bad stuff is going down. The man/boy/accessory/love of your life has totally let you down. Seriously. He didn't talk to you the whole night and it's just so definitely over. Bastard. Walking down the street you realise you absolutely need a soundtrack to this horrendous episode in your bloody hard life. Aha! Well, I would recommend Sam Isaac's What Good Did That Do?, starting with the line; "I ask you what you've done for me," and continuing; "It took the breath right out of me, like rejection of my family, Baby what's it worth? This is the last time" (repeated).

Three words spring to mind instantly - fitting, emotional...and deep. If you want to be in a British version of a US series in the vein of The Hills or Gossip Girl, Isaac is your man. His debut album, Bears, is a journey home alone, thinking. Sideways is based on pleasant, melodic guitar. Bears has a good intro and then some smatterings of rock thrown in. Come Back Home Tonight is fast and digestible and Sticker, Star and Tape has some electro excitement.

Moderat - Moderat

Mal ein ganz anderer Weg, eine Band kennen zu lernen: Übers Web 2.0 bekommt man ja gerne schon mal mit, welche Konzerte von seinem sozialen Netzwerk so besucht werden. Und wenn dann der halbe Berlin-Freundeskreis, der sich untereinander gar nicht kennt, auf dasselbe Konzert geht, werde ich neugierig. Moderat also. Erste Anlaufstelle für mich: last.fm. Leider gibt’s dort keine Songs zu hören. Also mal schnell ein Video auf youtube angeschaut:

Da klingelt’s schon wieder... Stimmt: Moderat waren ja auf dieser Apparat Remix-CD vertreten. Die hab ich aber wirklich selten gehört...

Schon 2002 fanden Gernot Bronsert und Sebastian Szarky (Modeselektor), sowie Sascha Ring (Apparat) den gemeinsamen Weg ins Studio und produzierten los. Immerhin kam eine 12“ heraus („Auf Kosten der Gesundheit“), die Arbeiten zum Album wurden auf unbestimmte Zeit verschoben. (last.fm)

Seit dem 8. Mai dieses Jahres gibt es das Album und fand nun endlich auch den Weg in meinen Player.

Facettenreich, poppig, dubbig schimmern die musikalischen Handschriften der Vorzeige-Bpitcher hindurch. Etwa bei "Rusty Nails", bei dem Apparat himself super-deepen Gesang beigesteuert hat. Der Song ist zugleich die erste Single-Auskopplung und dürfte auch Fans des Labelkollegen Paul Kalkbrenner erfreuen. "Seamonkey" destilliert danach die Apparatsche Melancholie und die hämmernden Beat-Konstrukte, für die Gernot und Sebastian bekannt und gesucht sind. Das Ergebnis ist ein druckvoller Strahler mit dem Prädikat Rave. Ähnlich symbiotisch ist auch die Zusammenarbeit bei "3 Minutes Of": Kopfkino-Sounds erzeugen wohlige Stimmung, bis der spät einsetzende Beat alles klarmacht. Wie Anfangs erwähnt, kommt bei Moderat der Pop-Appeal nicht zu kurz: "Sick With It" überzeugt durch Hymnenhaftigkeit und subtile 80er-Referenzen. Wer Pop macht, darf auch vielseitig sein. Dies beweist "Porc 1", ein musikalischer Acid-Trip durchs Kopfkino. (laut.de)

Message To Bears - Departures

Highlights are too many to mention. 'Hidden Beneath' plays with a four-to-the-floor dance beat, but what really matters is Alexander's guitar-picking, a shining, bell-like sound so distinctive he could almost patent it. 'Pretend to Forget' is heart-crackingly desolate, with a gorgeously dissonant cello and violin part to complement the intricate guitar work. 'Hope' dispenses with the guitars, leaving the strings to work the magic. Beginning with a series of mighty, sustained chords redolent of Barrington Pheloung's scores for Inspector Morse, the track then expands majestically with the introduction of tremoloed triple-time violins and further deepening of the chord structure by the addition of inner parts. This is the sound of a popular composer at his meridian.

Elsewhere on the record, Alexander allows himself to depart from formula a little. 'November' uses piano as the main rhythm instrument, rather than his usual guitar, taking him temporarily into Eric Satie territory, while remaining consistent with the vision of the album. On 'At the Top of This Hill', he even allows himself to sing a little (hum, really) and his sister Gemma is pressed into vocal service on the otherwise slightly dull track 'Snowdonia'. The record ends with an eerie little sequence of high-frequency Rhodes piano chords, with the title 'Lost Birds'.

So finishes a magnificent piece of modern-day musical impressionism. This is music of depth, vision and humanity: I find it hard to think that anyone could fail to be touched by the second half of 'Hope' or all of 'Autumn'. Find it, buy it, love it."

Karen O And The Kids - Where The Wild Things Are

Leider verkommen Soundtracks oft zu einer lieblosen Sammlung aus Singles, auf dass jeder etwas zum Schunkeln bekommt. Fantastischerweise sind die Macher von "Where The Wild Things Are" einen andere Weg gegangen: Der Soundtrack als Kunstform. Dafür haben sie mit Karen O von den Yeah Yeah Yeahs eine der aufregendsten Sängerinnen unserer Tage ins Boot geholt, die wiederum neben einem quietschfidelen Kinderchor ihre Bandkollegen und eine ganze Schar an formidablen Gastmusikern anwarb. Klingt bunt, ist es auch: An jeder Ecke warten bezaubernde Melodien und einfallsreiche Instrumentierungen. Mal singt uns Fräulein O., wie in "Worried Shoes", sanft in den Schlaf, dann fällen sie und ihre jugendliche Meute mit "Rumpus" einem wieder in den Rücken. So klingt perfekter, leichtfüßiger Pop mit Tiefgang - Großes akustisches Kino, Operation geglückt.

Japandroids - Post-Nothing

Weil die Jugend zu schnell vorbei ist, als dass sie zögern dürften, legen Japandroids los wie ein Blizzard. Schon das eröffnende "The boys are leaving town" gibt die Marschrichtung vor: weg, raus, fort. Weiter, immer weiter. Die motorische Unruhe entspricht dem gängigen ADH-Syndrom. Japandroids wissen trotzdem, wie merkfähige Songs geplärrt werden: "I don't wanna worry about dying", brüllt es aus dem phantastischen "Young hearts spark fire" heraus, und in "Wet hair" lässt sich sogar Testosteron nachweisen: "Must get to France / So we can French kiss some French girls."

Diese ruhelosen Hymnen werden erst aufs Nötigste skelettiert und dann mit aller übriggebliebenen Wucht gepimpt. Der Titel "Post-nothing" ist dabei glatt gelogen, weil das hier post-alles ist. (...)

Obwohl sich diese acht Songs immer wieder in eine Idee verbeißen und dann bis zu sechs Minuten auf ihr herumreiten, dauert das Album gerade einmal knapp 36 Minuten. Da bleibt weder Zeit für Füller noch für Vers-Refrain-Langeweile, es gibt nur Hits, Hits, Hits. Und vor allem deswegen ist "Post-nothing" so schnell durch: damit man es noch schneller wieder von vorne hören kann.
