The music on Songs of a Lost World feels more direct and purposeful than either of its immediate predecessors. Even the slowest tracks have a bruising impact, courtesy of the rhythm section.

Their brand of ’80s pastiche offers one kind of safety in an otherwise dangerous world. My Bulgarian mother always tells me that we Eastern Europeans, or maybe just people with anxiety disorders are destined to suffer. While contemporary political and personal unrest continues to invade the lives of Molchat Doma’s members and those of many other people their music remains firmly rooted in the past. Even if it’s not entirely innovative, it offers a sense of security, and that can be its own reward.

Belaya Polosa wears its many influences on its sleeve, and we are better off for it. For the baby bats who may have picked up on the dark, minimalism of their earlier work, this is a great exposure to the myriad vibes and sounds of synth-forward goth pop. For us old heads, it is a welcoming buffet of all of the delicious things that made us fall in love with the shadows in the first place, both a love letter to the spirit of goth and a brave step forward for Molchat Doma. This band does not deserve to be a simple meme, stuck in the revolving door of banality, and they prove that their prowess extends beyond flash-in-the-pan internet culture. Yeah, not everyone loves goth, new wave, or synth pop, but for those of us that do, Belaya Polosa is sweet, sweet candy for the ears.

IST IST’s last album, ‘Protagonists’, was a big step on this journey, but ‘Light A Bigger Fire’ places them in the heart of the modern pop world. Songs of heartbreak have never sounded so radio friendly without losing their introspective heart and soul. All the band’s classic hallmarks are still in place, from the melancholic bass lines, to the washes of atmospheric keyboards shackled to the tightest drums, the chiming guitar shapes and the baritone vocals and yet reshaped to reach out from beyond the cult.

There is a synth indulgence heard through Light a Bigger Fire which frees the band up that little bit more. A swinging sound that gears Ist Ist up as a collection of musicians with a Future Islands mindset to them. Intimate detail, and out-there instrumentals provide such a joy to hear. Confident work but, crucially, with this growth in interest, they have not lost what made their previous works so intimate. This bigger fire is a broader one, and there is no harm in hearing their wider sound at work. Songs like Dreams Aren’t Enough get to grips with this new tone well and there is much to love about Light a Bigger Fire. Lyrically charmed works, moments of impotence in the face of fear and whining guitar work solidify this numbness through trauma.

(…) there’s  a post-Strange Times or  Heaven Up Here Bunnymen sweep and dark (not goth) textural tension in the standout, heck-of-an opener “The Covenant,” “The Sacrifice,” and the (Irish) Whipping-Boy-esque “Thorns.” These don’t dazzle in static-y shoegaze noise. They’re punchy, burble-bassed/based, guitar rockers that hold you in their grip, with glistening guitar effects effecting rainforest-atmospheric shadings, while the rock-solid rhythm section anchors pulsing gliders such as “Push Me Under” and “Under My Wings.” Haunting and ghostly-lovely, BSL are worth following where’er they go.

Bis zur Veröffentlichung des fünften Albums "Okovi" lief bei Zola Jesus zumindest zeitlich alles ziemlich planbar. Spätestens alle drei Jahre erschien ein neues Werk. Nach "Conatus" war "Taiga" ein relativer Tiefpunkt. "Okovi" gefiel zumindest mir wieder besser. 

Doch dann sorgte Nika Roza Danilovas Schreibblockade für eine längere Albumpause. Sie suchte sich starke Partner an ihrer Seite, um die Kurve zu bekommen: Produzent Randall Dunn (der auch bei Sunn O))) und Anna Von Hausswolff seine Kompetenz im Bereich düsterer Klänge bewies) sowie Fiona Apple-, Tori Amos-Schlagzeuger Matt Chamberlain  halfen ihr aus ihrer Sackgasse.

Das Ergebnis "Arkhon" bietet keine wesentlichen Überraschungen aber eine düster-harmonische Verschmelzung ihrer letzten Alben. Die Pop-Einflüsse von "Taiga" sind ein dezenter Kontrapunkt zur wieder dunkleren Grundstimmung. "Arkhon" ist Zola Jesus' bislang abwechslungsreichstes Album mit dem Opener "Lost" und "Sewn" als Höhepunkten. Letzteres ist beeinflusst durch Danilovas familiäre Verbindung nach Russland und in die Ukraine. Unter dem Eindruck der Lage würde es nicht überraschen, wenn das nächste Album "Sewn" als Blaupause nimmt. Das Ergebnis könnte spannend klingen.

Das dieses Jahr Tears For Fears gerne als Referenz hergenommen wird, verweise ich auf diese Einschätzung:

True to its transitory nature, Arkhon feels like Danilova’s first record with permeable boundaries. For the first time since 2009’s The Spoils, this album feels in conversation with broader musical culture, with Danilova seemingly more content to reference and borrow from pop music at large. Certain moments in “Undertow” obliquely interpolate Tears for Fears’ “Everybody Wants to Rule the World”—perhaps the greatest pop song ever written about the corrupting lust for power—while the final third of “Into the Wild,” a slow lament set to mournful piano and abstracted percussion, feels like Danilova’s answer to FKA twigs’ “Cellophane.” (Pitchfork)

On this record, we find a fresh mix of fresh punchy punk urgency, synth touches, and new wave rock. London Plane would have been equally at home playing CBGB’s, for instance, and the Batcave – a band that is clearly inspired by the formative cauldron of revolution that erupted from the golden days of NYC’s 70’s punk, along with the dark elements of Joy Division wariness and Bauhaus’ temperament.

Their new collection of tracks is electrifying, possessed, pulsing and relentless. Its content was greatly informed by several internal tragedies faced by band members during its production, including the deaths of family members, coupled with the tumultuous political situation that saw the ascension of villains. Where the vocals let in some hope, the bass snarls like something Lemmy would be proud of, the drums rumble and hiss, and the serrated guitar preens as cold as a weapon of mass destruction.

Opener ‘Wolves’ raises the curtain brilliantly, tieing together ominous washes of synths, brooding baritone vocals and howling trails of guitar and leaving a mouth-watering taste of what’s to come. The urgent ‘You’re Mine’ is an atmospheric post-punk treat with its low slung basslines and ear-catching refrain, while ‘Black’ delivers something more melodic and introspective. (…)
Managing to accomplish such a mature and defined sound on a debut album is an impressive feat for sure. A gritty and deep collection of tracks, yet hook-laden and accessible enough to stand out on other levels.

Architecture just is. It sits, humble honest, diligent and proud. Like a gritty, grimacing hard-working man. It’s deep and powerful. It writhes and arches, one-minute enthralling the next bringing you close to tears. From the design of the sleeves, the art prints and the limited coloured vinyl releases, everything sits in harmony, like ducks in a row. It’s the release they deserve – a fitting tribute to one of Manchester’s finest bands.
A magnificent debut. It’s the culmination of hard work and dedication, a record produced without compromise and one which will sit as one my favourite ever albums for a long time to come.

Zum träumerischen Gesang von Sängerin Box von Dü gesellen sich immer wieder tieftraurige, sphärische Klanggebilde von Klangmagier Mike, die zum Teil – wie bei der ersten Single The First Dream – an frühere Zeiten der Altehrwürdigen The Cure erinnern. Und eine Premiere gibt es ebenfalls zu feiern, denn mit Dein Herz Schlägt Noch haben die Kölner ihren ersten deutschsprachigen Song veröffentlicht, der zu keinem Zeitpunkt peinlich oder kitschig klingt, sondern sich vielmehr bestens ins Gesamtkonzept einfügt. Noch mehr als beim Debüt sollte man sich die Zeit nehmen, das Album ganz auf sich wirken zu lassen, denn es ist noch atmosphärischer und verträumter geworden, beschwört sogar ein ums andere Mal den Geist alter 4AD-Zeiten und besitzt im Titeltrack ein weiteres Highlight.

Dancefloor Highlight dürfte das düster, minimal arrangierte „ashes“ sein, das obendrein eine bestechende Gesangsmelodie hat. „frozen in time“ vermischt einen Flangerbass mit einer „Slowdive“-Leadgitarre und einmal Minimal-Pling-Pling-Keyboard – eine Mischung, die ausgesprochen gut funktioniert. Es geht weiter mit geschichtetem Gesang, einer Art Indie Pop Song in dreamy und dann der Titelsong: Düster, anklagend und kalt baut er sich langsam auf und scheint sich in kreisendem Gesang zu verlieren.
mit „zerfall“ haben uns „box and the twins“ einen wirklich hervorragenden Zweitling beschert, der sicher eines DER Alben des Jahres sein dürfte!

The most high-profile cameos come from New Wave icons Gary Numan and Martin Gore, who add ethereal backing vocals on Within The Deepest Darkness (Fearful), adding eerie counterpoint to Hussey’s hushed vocals as the track escalates from ghostly atmospherics into a pulse-pounding outro.
Gore also adds soaring backing vocals to Only You and You Alone, one of the band’s most effective ballads. Their dual vocal’s dovetail with emotive potency, while Mission bassist Craig Adams lays down one of his patented tectonic basslines.
Jade is a sterling example of the type of romantic musical melodrama The Mission weave so well: layers of interweaving guitar textures, hypnotic bass and synth-soundscapes build into an anthem with an explosive cinematic climax.
Blood in the Road is another stomper, veering from glistening arpeggiated verse to classic rock chorus, while the somber closing track Phantom Pain adds discordant sax to the mix–an unusual but winning deviation from the band’s musical template.
Another Fall From Grace is a striking reminder of The Mission’s strengths. For a band celebrating their 30th anniversary, it shows there’s still plenty of life left in them yet. To quote Met-Amor-Phosis: “with age comes change.” It’s an older and wiser Mission for sure, but they’ve tapped into a musical fountain of youth.

Obwohl manche der Songs Kennern in den Urversionen schon von limitierten EP s bekannt sein könnten, ergibt sich hier ein völlig geschlossenes Werk, das der Entwicklung der Band vom Rockabilly, Garage und Punk kommend zu immer mehr 80 s-affinen Anklängen an die Postpunk- und Gothic-Rock Zeiten Rechnung trägt. THE DARK SHADOWS sind 2013 wahre Meister der atmosphärisch-düsteren Klänge, verzaubern mit bedrohlich treibenden Uptempo-Fegern wie 'Distänt Minds' oder 'Written In The Snow' genauso sehr wie mit stimmungsvoll getragenen Wave-Hymnen wie 'Twinns', 'The Boy From Berlin' oder 'Still Lives...'. Die Ballade 'Scissors' mit ihren wunderschönen Harmonien und der filigranen akustisch-sphärischen Anmutung ist ein absolutes Highlight. Mit weiten Klangräumen, sicher gesetzten und unvergesslichen Harmoniebögen, schlüssigen, dramatischen Arrangements und der fesselnden Stimme von BRIGITTE HANDLEY gehen THE DARK SHADOWS selbstbewusst ihren musikalischen Weg weiter, eindeutige Genre-Zuschreibungen sind den Australierinnen dabei nicht wichtig. Mit 'Autumn Still...' hat die Band beste Chancen, von ihrer 'Homebase', der Rockabilly- und Psychobilly-Szene ausgehend, ein breites Spektrum von Musikfans zu begeistern. Ich wollte den Sound, den wir live erzeugen, so gut wie möglich einfangen und ich denke, dass uns dies zum ersten Mal wirklich gelungen ist … Wir hatten bei den Aufnahmen unglaublich viel Spaß und ich denke, dass man dies spürt, wenn man die Scheibe hört. Jetzt ist es fertig, das neue Album, das Laut seinem Titel „Das hellste Licht“ verspricht. Für mich eine Neuerfindung von The Mission, wie sie nicht besser hätte sein können. Wer hier jedoch eine nahtlose Fortsetzung des bewährten und altbekannten Sounds erwartet, wird sehr überrascht sein. Die Truppe hört sich erfrischend neu und rockig an. Die neuen Stücke mit grandiosen Melodien und Texten über den Teufel, über Pathos und Herzschmerz gehören sicherlich zu den überzeugendsten, die Hussey je geschrieben hat. Zudem hat seine unverkennbare Stimme noch nie so ehrlich geklungen wie auf diesem Album. Simon Hinkler kann sich nach fast 20 Jahren außerhalb des Musikbusiness mit Fug und Recht wieder als Gitarrengott seiner Generation bezeichnen lassen. Sein Spiel auf dem neuen The Mission Album ist absolut ausdrucksstark. Zum allerersten Mal ist Simon Hinkler aus Husseys Schatten herausgetreten und hat mit seinem Gitarrenspiel seine eigene wahre Stimme gefunden, die er ausdrucksstark in Titeln wie „From The Oyster Comes The Pearl“ wiedergibt. Der Opener „Black Cat Bone“ entführt den Zuhörer aber zunächst auf ruhigen Weg ins neue Album. Eine langsam aufbauende Spannung, eine typische Hussey Stimme, voller Kraft, Hass und Schmerz. „Everything But The Squeal” ist das zweite Stück und dieses strotzt nur so vor Kraft. Das ist Rock in seiner Urform der durch seine harte Ehrlichkeit überzeugt. Singlequalitäten und Radiotauglichkeit dürfte „Sometimes The Brightest Light Com“ vermitteln. Das Stück ist so eingängig, das es direkt im Ohr hängen bleibt. Auch hier kommt die Stärke von Simon Hinklers Gitarrenspiel voll zur Geltung. Ihr wollt ein Hauch Rocky Horror Picture Show? Das war das Erste, was mir zu „Born Under A Good Sign“ einfiel. Party, Spaß und sau gute Laune vermittelt dieser Track. „Ain’t No Prayer In The Bible Can“ ist für mich eines der besten Stücke auf dem Album mit einem ungeheuren Tiefgang! „Litany For The Faithful” eine fantastisch melodische und gefühlvolle Ballade, in der das Gitarrenspiel von Slink und die Stimme von Hussey voll und ganz aufblühen.

Fazit: Nie haben sich die Legenden des Gothic Rock besser angehört. Das Album der alten Haudegen setzt neue Maßstäbe. The Mission hören sich erholt, frisch und neu an und doch sind die Grundelemente und Stärken unverkennbar. Es ist in meinen Augen ihr bisheriges Meisterwerk, was sie geschaffen haben. Ich freue mich jetzt schon auf das Konzert im Winter, endlich die Stücke Live zu erleben. Von mir gibt es hier eine ganz klare 9,5 von 10 Punkten. Die lange (Zwangs) Pause tat den Jungs gut. Das sollten einige andere Bands auch mal machen und nicht im Jahresrhythmus versuchen neue Alben auf den Markt zu schütten.
