Tears Run Rings - Everything In The End

Vermutlich haben sich Laura Watling (Gesang, Bass), Matthew Bice (Gesang, Gitarre), Ed Mazzucco (Gitarre) und Dwayne Palasek (Schlagzeug) nach dem 1988 veröffentlichten Song von Marc Almond benannt, dabei wäre ein Liedtitel von Slowdive (oder zur Not auch anderen Shoegazern und Dream Poppern) doch eine wesentlich näher liegende Wahl gewesen.

„Everything In The End“ ist nach „Always, Sometimes, Seldom, Never“ (2008), „Distance“ (2010) und „In Surges“ (2016) bereits das vierte Album der aus Portland stammenden Tears Run Rings. Es bietet 12 Songs mit einer Laufzeit von über einer Stunde und ist als Doppelalbum konzipiert, bei der jede der vier Seiten mit einem eigenen Klang und Gefühl aufwartet. Logischerweise hat ihr Label Shelflife Records auch eine Doppel-LP (180g black Vinyl, housed in a deluxe gatefold Sleeve) spendiert.

The band's sound inevitably brings to mind Slowdive, but on this album in particular, TRR space the songs out and write more nuanced hooks. There are some more immediate moments, such as the jangly yet hazy alternative rock of "Helios Helada," but even these will feature extended outros that let the feelings linger. "XO" matches its lyrics of romantic devotion with an appropriately yearning melody, which is clear and expressive without being melodramatic. "Abandon" is beautifully evocative and mysterious, sauntering in before arriving at a gorgeous chiming guitar bridge, and continuing its divine ascendance. The soft, steady pulse of "Since You've Gone" eloquently expresses the disenchantment of a breakup, elevated by shimmering electronics and sighing backup vocals. "Nothing More" has a glorious wash of guitars, crashing against the slow but persistent drums. TRR prefer meditative immersion to overwhelming rushes of energy, but their music is still deeply emotive, and Everything in the End is ultimately a highly rewarding experience.
