Peel Dream Magazine - Rose Main Reading Room

Auf gleich 15 Songs nehmen einen Peel Dream Magazine hier auf einen nostalgischen 70er Jahre Trip, der von sanft säuselnder Electronica über verspielten Psychedelic-Pop und mäandernden Krautrock bis zu verträumten Folkpop sowie schwerelosem Space-Pop reicht.

Das Trio besteht aus Joseph Setevens, Olivia Babuka Black sowie Ian Gibbs und wird auf seinem vierten Album noch on Lina Tullgren und Lu Coy unterstützt. „Rose Main Reading Room“ dürfte auf seinem vierten Album Fans von Stereolab („Lie In The Gutter“), Saint Etienne („R.I.P. (Running In Place)“), Tunng („Oblast“), Yo La Tengo („I Wasn’t Made For War“) und Sufjan Stevens („Recital“) eine Freude bereiten.

The bubbling unease and chirpy instrumentation sleepily spar with each other. Although Rose Main Reading Room is mostly a pleasant listen—one I heavily recommend absorbing outside in a park with headphones on to drink up all its nuances—more editing might give these tracks a greater sense of stakes and urgency. Still, in Rose Main Reading Room’s brightest moments, it acts as a gentle rub to extinguish anxiety or as a beautiful reminder to commune with our inner child. 

We’re left with an uneasy graciousness, the sentiment that we should just be lucky to be alive

New album ‘Rose Main Reading Room’ is wonderful – rich in its songwriting scope, it moves with maturity and confidence.

The slight Baroque flourishes enhance their central vision, while the band are never cowed by limitations. Broad and ambitious, ‘Rose Main Reading Room’ taps into the spectral vision of Sufjan Stevens, while the carefully layered minimalist motifs often build towards Steve Reich levels of grandeur.

It’s easy to throw reference points at their work, but this ignores the simple truth that ‘Rose Main Reading Room’ probably contains the band’s strongest, most assertive batch of songs to date.

It moves fluidly between hypnotic drones, acoustic instrumentation, and rhythm-driven tracks. Woodwinds and electronics create a multi-layered experience, balancing lush, organic sounds with synthetic rhythms.
