Ist Ist - Protagonists

So schnell kann es gehen: Vor weniger als drei Jahren saßen wir hier wegen des Debütalbums von Ist Ist zu Gericht und kamen zu keinem einhelligen Urteil. Insgesamt gab es „nur“ 7,333 Punkte für „Architecture“, da ich meine mittelprächtige Bewertung mit „Das ist mir dann doch etwas zu gothic-rockig“ begründete.

Mittlerweile hat die Band aus Manchester nicht nur ihr zweites Album „The Art Of Lying“ veröffentlicht (von und unbemerkt, aber erstmals in den UK Charts auf Platz 87), sondern auch bereits dessen Nachfolger „Protagonists“. Und auch mein damaliges Urteil wird sich aufgrund der stilistischen Weiterentwicklung nicht wiederholen. 

Zwar haben Ist Ist weiterhin düsteren Post-Punk im Gepäck, der sich auch in der nebligen Gothic Disco gut machen würde („Stamp You Out“), laufen aber teilweise Interpol den Rang ab („All Downhill“, „Emily“), bauen Synthesizer sowie zweite Gesangsstimmen in ihren Sound ein („The Protagonist“, „Mary In The Black And White Room“ oder „Nothing More Nothing Less“, das mehr New Order als Joy Division ist) oder nehmen das Tempo so weit raus, dass man kurz davor ist von einer Piano-Ballade zu sprechen („Artefacts“). 

„Protagonists“ ist als CD, Kassette und LP (black Vinyl, translucent orange Vinyl, green marbled Vinyl, white Vinyl (2LP)) erschinen.

The album is full of big tracks, and the jaunty Mary in the Black and White Room, another previous room reminds be of late 80’s Psychedelic Furs with great synths from Mat Peters taking the lead. Speaking about the track, frontman Houghton says: “Mary in the Black and White Room is about trying to figure out if experience trumps knowledge. See ‘the Knowledge Argument’ where the subject, Mary, exists in a black and white world but has extensive descriptions of colour, but you don’t know if she knows what they actually look like until exposed to it. Really interesting stuff.”

As mentioned at the start, Emily should need no introduction to long term fans. It sounds more epic here, beefed up and more atmospheric than ever. A definite highpoint. Artefacts offers something of a moody pallet cleanser, piano led piece before the brooding and dystopian vibe of Fools Paradise, referencing the difficulties of family relationships and stressing that family must, where possible, put their differences to achieve a common goal.

The penultimate piece is the title track on which the synth lines positively shimmer, leading into the closing Trapdoors, a track of which the frontman explains “I was trying to write about someone who was trying their best but past endeavours were holding them back. I used the trapdoor beneath their feet as symbolism for this.”

Protagonists is a solid album which will only improve on repeat listens. It will delight existing fans and, if there’s any justice, will attract many more.
