The Coral - Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medicine Show

Über die eine Hälfte des von The Coral veröffentlichten Doppelschlag haben wir ja bereits heute vor vier Wochen gesprochen, nun kommen wir noch kurz zum anderen: Während „Sea Of Mirrors“ Platz 3 der UK Charts erreichen konnte, kam „Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medicine Show“ nur auf Platz 36. Dies könnte zwei Gründe haben. 

Denn einerseits ist das Album nur in physischer Form (CD, Kassette, LP (black Vinyl)) erschienen und bei den Streaming Diensten nicht zu finden, so dass beim Bestimmen der Chartplatzierungen die Stream komplett aus der Wertung gefallen sind. 

Andererseits handelt es sich bei „Holy Joe’s Coral Island Medicine Show“ um das Folk & Western & Country Album von The Coral. Ähnlich wie bei „Coral Island“ (2021) führt uns The Great Muriarty alias Ian Murray, der Großvater der Skelly-Brüder, als Erzähler/Radio-DJ Holy Joe in Form von gleich sieben Ansagen durch die Platte/die Nacht und spielt Mörderballaden, Todeslieder und Songs über Herumtreiber, Gauner und andere zwielichtige Gestalten. Da haben vermutlich nicht alle Fans der Band das Radio eingeschaltet…

 

Songs like The Road Is Calling and Down By The Riverside recall their early Magic And Medicine years, but the band take moments to really delve further back in time. Baby Face Nelson is a great ninety-second skiffle trip and Long Drive To The City returns to aLee Hazlewood with Nancy Sinatra country-psych style. One thing that marks out the album, as well as the pure strength in the songwriting, are the collaborations that abound. On Holy Joe… we also get an appearance from John Simm, reading Power’s poem Drifter’s Prayer.

The final song on the album, Coral Island Killer, may be a breadcrumb marking the next turn in the road for the band, another character to explore. Over simple acoustic arpeggios, the killer stalks the boardwalks, an angel or a clown, the wickedness blowing through their seaside town, whispering to residents as they drift through winter nights. Whichever way the band decide to take on their next album, the fact that they sign off the album with Holy Joe rolling the credits on the show signals that, after two great albums set on Coral Island, they may be ready to set sail for more distant shores once again.
