Charlotte Hatherley - True Love

Apropos Charlotte Hatherley. Das ehemalige Mitglied von Ash (1997-2006) hat solo vier Alben veröffentlicht, war in der Live-Band von Birdy und KT Tunstall und schrieb den Soundtrack für den Science Fiction-Kurzfilm „The Last Man“. Dessen Regisseur, Gavin Rothery, hat sich zuletzt bei ihr mit dem Video zu Single „A Sign“ revanchiert:

Das Sci-Fi-Thema wird vom Plattencover über den thematischen Überbau des Konzeptalbums bis zur Musik beibehalten. Dazu Charlotte Hatherley: 

„True Love“ is greatly influenced by my love of science fiction realism. It’s a break up record and my character, Traveller, is on a different planet looking for True Love.

Musikalisch bewegen sich die zehn, von Synthesizern geprägten Songs, auf denen Green Gartside von Scritti Politti als Gastsänger zu hören ist, zwischen M83, Vangelis, Chromatics und Air.

True Love’s conceit is classic sci-fi: brokenhearted, the protagonist, Traveller, wanders a distant planet in search of love. Vangelis’s Blade Runner soundtrack is the obvious inspiration behind these ethereal soundscapes, although this is much more than derivative, fangirl fare.
A Sign and Hook You Up are glorious pop songs in their own right, while Hatherley’s yearning vocals ensure that even the most robotic moments retain a compellingly human core.
