Review:

Beneath all that noise sit surprisingly vulnerable songs. Sunsets Don’t Excite Me uses deliberately odd fishing imagery, inspired by an impromptu trip to the National Trout Centre, but lines about thoughts weighing a tonne and missing someone who once missed you give the song a weary emotional undertow.

On All The Nice People, Florence begins from a position of defiance, singing “I love myself more than you could possibly ever hate me”, before later admitting a need for someone else’s love. Swagger and insecurity sit side by side.

The album closes with its other five-minute track, A Knife, and Cindy again allow themselves room to breathe. Guitars ring into silence. Florence’s voice echoes almost like a choir. The band rises, falls away, then crashes back in. Behind it is a lyric about watching someone suffer and having no idea how to help. By the final minute the drums are accelerating, guitars squalling and voices rising with them.

Cindy have described their gigs as places to let off steam. The Way I Do captures that feeling: it is messy, physical and restless, with vulnerability inside the noise. It sounds impatient, self-aware and urgent.
