Natalie Imbruglia - Algorithm

Beginnen wir mit dem ungewöhnlichsten Song auf „Algorithm“, dem siebten Studioalbum von Natalie Imbruglia: Der Titelsong ist ein düster pulsierender Elektropop-Song, der an die Schrägheit der Sparks denken lässt und den ich eher einer Róisín Murphy als einer Natalie Imbruglia zugeschrieben hätte. 

 

Ansonsten versucht Natalie Imbruglia, einer Freundin, Landsfrau und „Nachbarin“ nachzueifern und sich in Richtung Pop („Beautiful Love“, „Upside Down“), Synthpop („Just Drive“) und Disco („Breathe With The Fire Lola“) zu bewegen: „Sounds Like It Feels“ passt in einer Playliste gut hinter „All The Lovers“ und „Catastrophe“ kriegt man nicht so schnell aus dem Kopf, auch wenn hier kein „La-la-la-la-la-la-la-la“ sondern ein „Ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay, ay“ erschallt. Dafür lässt sich auch noch gut mitklatschen.

Gitarrigen Pop muss man mit der Lupe suchen und findet ihn beispielsweise in „Endgame“. 

 

Imbruglia hat das Album über ihr eigenes Label Landgirl Records veröffentlicht und war an allen Songs als Mit-Komponistin und -Produzentin beteiligt. So entstand beispielsweise das finale „Beautiful Love“ zusammen mit Gary Lightbody von Snow Patrol und dem Songwriter Fraser T. Smith (James Morrisson, Adele). Die wichtigsten Partner aber waren - wie beim Vorgänger „Firebird“ (2021) - MyRiot, ein britisches Musikproduzenten- und Songwriter-Duo, das aus Tim Bran und Roy Kerr (London Grammar, Primal Scream) besteht.

„Algorithm“ ist als CD, Kassette und LP (black Vinyl, neon pink Vinyl, purple Vinyl, red Vinyl, orange Vinyl) erhältlich.

 

Lead single ‘Upside Down’ is as a strong introduction to the pop-heavy LP, while ‘Endgame’ sits alongside the very best of her 1997 debut album ‘Left of the Middle’ – which she references in the opening line of the industrial synth-pop bonanza ‘Jesus on Mars’: ‘I keep on searchin’ but the answer’s in a riddle / Untangled clarity somewhere left of the middle.’

With independence comes a newfound freedom; the handclap-ready ‘Catastrophe’ sits alongside the dream-pop of ‘Just Drive’ and ‘Sounds Like It Feels’, and the trance-inspired ‘Breathe With the Fire Lola’ seamlessly, as her bright, glossy vocals provide the common thread. Some directions prove more fruitful than others, but together they gel.
