Tomberlin - At Weddings

Ausgestattet mit den Referenzen Owen Pallett (Produktion) und Saddle Creek (Label) tritt Sarah Beth Tomberlin an, um sich mit „At Weddings“ leise, still und heimlich in die Jahresbestenlisten zu schleichen. Lauscht man den zehn berührenden und traurigen Folksongs, so glaubt man zunächst gar nicht, dass es sich um das Debütalbum einer erst 23-jährige Künstlerin handelt, die diese Kompositionen bereits vor drei Jahren im Kasten hatte. 

Sarah Beth Tomberlin setzt allein auf Stimme, Gitarre und die Stärke ihrer Songs und Owen Pallett rückt diese durch seine dezenten Arrangements und den spärlichen Einsatz von Gitarre, Streichern und Tasteninstrumenten noch deutlicher in den Fokus. 

Gute Kritiken für „At Weddings“ sind schwer zu finden, aber nur, weil sich diese auf einem weit höheren Niveau einzupendeln scheinen: Aktuell steht das Album, das Fans von Azure Ray, Grouper, Daughter, Julien Baker oder (um auch männliche Musiker zu nennen) Elliott Smith und Conor Oberst bezaubern wird, bei Metacritic bei 84/100 Punkten:

Guarded and beautifully measured, At Weddings has an absorbingly intimate quality. Lonesome reverberating guitars ricochet off the sparse percussion while tempered piano lines chime and assuage. Whether it be the swathes of white noise on “Tornado”, the yowl of feedback on “Self-Help” or the rudimental piano line on sublime opener “Any Other Way” each embellishment hangs as if it were a carefully placed decoration. Above all of this Tomberlin’s voice shines as the warm heart of the record.

Sarah Beth dredges up her lowest moments, forcing her to painfully relive the highs. It’s an album utterly relatable because love, and heartbreak, are universal. It’s also something so amazingly personal that no one could precisely duplicate it, because every experience is specific to Tomberlin’s journey. That’s At Weddings: passion, devastation, depression , and strength rolled into one. It’s tenacious, and it’s beautiful.

It can be heartbreaking at times, but At Weddings doesn't allow itself to wallow. If anything, it's Tomberlin sharing with us her own form of catharsis, a collection of intimate and powerful songs that sift through life's more disappointing and challenging moments to find the beauty we sometimes overlook.
