Our Girl - Stranger Today

Brighton rocks! Das wissen nicht nur Fans der Blood Red Shoes oder süßer, klebriger Zuckerstangen, sondern auch die Menschen, die seit geraumer Zeit auf das Debütalbum des in Brighton gegründeten Trios warten. Our Girl sind Soph Nathan (Gesang, Gitarre), die gleichzeitig auch Gitarristin bei The Big Moon ist und hier die Songs schreibt, Josh Tyler (Bass) und Lauren Wilson (Schlagzeug) und haben seit 2015 mehrere Singles veröffentlicht, die im Vereinigten Königreich die Erwartungen hoch schraubten. 

Nun steht „Stranger Today“ in den Plattenläden und ist offensichtlich ein Fest für Fans von Fuzz-/Grunge-/Riot Girl-/Shoegaze-/Indie-Rock - wenn man den hervorragenden Plattenkritiken glauben schenken mag. Dass von den älteren Songs nur „Our Girl“ und „Being Around“ berücksichtigt wurden und das Album eröffnen dürfen, macht Sinn, denn „Our Girl“ wurde auch zum Bandnamen, ist der erste Song, den Soph Nathan komponierte, der erste, den die Band gemeinsam spielte und ihre erste Demo-Aufnahme. Zudem freuen sich Fans und Sammler einerseits nun erst recht über die älteren Songs, die es nur auf den Singles gibt, und können es andererseits neuere Songs wie „In My Head“ oder „Level“ durchaus mit diesen aufnehmen.

„Stranger Today“ wurde von Bill Ryder-Jones (ehemals bei The Coral) produziert und die drei Damen waren offensichtlich so von ihm angetan, das er zum Ehren-Mitglied ernannt wurde. Das Album ist als CD, LP und Kassette erhältlich und über die Bandcamp-Seite von Our Girl kann man noch limitierte Versionen (Orange Vinyl) kaufen, denen noch zusätzlich eine „Bedroom Record“ beiliegt.

So, kommen wir zu „In My Head“, „Our Girl“ (live und mit Bill Ryder-Jones) und „I Really Like It“ sowie den angesprochenen Plattenkritiken:

It’s the catchy melodies, fuzzy guitars and shoegaze sensibilities that give tracks like "Being Around" their impact, affording the band an earwormy quality that’s hard to shake. The swirling eponymous opening track sets this precedent, whereas new track “Josephine” takes a grungy direction; what begins as a discernible agitation morphs into a raw and visceral dissatisfaction. It’s a musical fluctuation of emotion that mirrors those we often feel inside that calms itself with a woozy and wandering instrumental, big enough to bask in and proves itself as a true album highlight.

The real power of Stranger Today is the connection between Nathan and her guitar. At times they are pulling against each other. Nathan croons softly and gently, while it sounds like she’s torturing her instrument and effects pedals. Then a moment later, they are both in unison and everything around you loses perspective and fades into background. (…)
Each track hits you like a beautiful wave. As the songs build, their current pulls you under; if they want to pummel you, there is very little you can do. If they want to give you a slightly melodic respite to catch your breath, ‘Level’ and ‘Sub Rosa’, then you just go with it. ‘Two Life’ features one of the stand out moments on ‘Stranger Today’. A hypnotic riff builds and builds until it’s an all-consuming beast. (…)
