Miles Kane - Coup De Grace

10 Fakten zum neuen Album von Miles Kane:

1. Nach „Colour Of The Trap“ (2011), das mit 8,333 Punkten Platz 3 bei Platten vor Gericht erreichte, und „Don’t Forget Who You Are“ (2013 und nur noch 7,000 Punkte und Platz 98) ist das am 10.08.2018 veröffentlichte „Coup De Grace“ das dritte Soloalbum von Miles Kane.

2. Die lange Wartezeit (1894 Tage) lässt sich durch eine Schreibblockade, eine Trennung, die Wiederaufnahme der Last Shadow Puppets (mit dem daraus resultierenden „Everything You’ve Come To Expect“) und der Tournee mit einer Beatles Tribute-Band namens Dr. Pepper's Jaded Hearts Club Band (zusammen mit Matt Bellamy von muse, Ilan Rubin von Nine Inch nails und Sean Payne von The Zutons) erklären.

3. Erst durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Jamie T schritt das Songwriting wieder voran: 7 der 10 Songs auf „Coup De Grace“ komponierten die beiden gemeinsam. Nur der Titelsong, „Silverscreen“ und „Shavambacu“ entstanden bereits kurz nach dem Album „Don’t Forget Who You Are“ in Los Angeles in Kooperation mit den US-amerikanischen Musikern Zach Dawes, Loren Humphrey und Tyler Parkford.

4. Lana Del Rey schrieb den Chorus von „Loaded“ und taucht daher ebenfalls als Mit-Autor auf. Weitere gemeinsame Kompositionen liegen noch in der Schublade, wie Kane erklärt: “I wanted the new album to be wild, very lively. Some of the songs I wrote were slow ballads – they were quite John Lennon-y. That includes other songs I wrote with Lana. I’m still proud of the songs, but they didn’t work for this album.” „Loaded“ wurde am 16. April als erste Single veröffentlicht: 

5. „Coup De Grace“ wurde in Los Angeles zusammen mit dem Produzenten John Congleton innerhalb von zwei Wochen aufgenommen.

6. Der Albumtitel ist eine Referenz an den „closing move“ seines liebsten WWE Wrestlers Finn Bálor. 

7. Passend dazu: Finn Bálor prügelt sich mit Kane im Video zur zweiten Single „Cry On My Guitar“. Dazu Kane: I loved every minute making this video with my good friend and wrestling hero Finn Balor and directing genius Brook Linder. I felt like I was in a bond movie! I am so proud of this one and I hope you all enjoy it!

8. „Coup de Grace“ läuft 31:53 Minuten und ist als CD und LP erhältlich. Mit etwas Glück findet man noch die Version: Limited Edition Gatefold Sleeve Pink Vinyl.

9. „Für mich persönlich ist dieses Album das mit Abstand wichtigste Werk, das ich überhaupt aufgenommen habe“, so Miles Kane, „fünf Jahre stecken in diesen Songs! So viele Gefühle sind das, so viel Aufregung, das alles zeichnet dieses Album aus!“ Die Plattenkritiker können diese Begeisterung nicht ganz teilen: Bei Metacritic steht „Coup de Grace“ aktuell bei 57/100 Punkten und damit weit hinter „Colour Of The Trap“ (73/100) und „Don’t Forget Who You Are“ (71/100) oder den Alben der Last Shadow Puppets „The Age Of The Understatement“ (77/100) und „Everything You've Come to Expect“ (70/100). Zumindest „Rascalize“ (2008) von seiner ehemaligen Band The Rascals war laut Metacriti noch schlechter (48/100).

 On songs such as Loaded, a California pop strut, this complex machinery runs smoothly, despite lyrics evoking teen verse scribbled under an Ian Brown poster: “Racing like a psycho, walking on a tightrope, funky like a monkey with my makeup running.” It’s perhaps unpromising to think of Kane, hardly recognised for his emotional range, swooning his way through a breakup, but his one-size-fits-all showmanship holds it together, from Killing the Joke’s daydream synth balladry to Cry on My Guitar’s pouty glam-up. There’s also plenty that flounders: on Coup de Grace, a funky get-over-her anthem, he boisterously howls the title over a sweet, featherlight guitar jangle, suggesting that autofill vulnerability isn’t the sharpest creative tool when it comes to heartbreak.

The problem with Kane’s emulation of past performers is that he remains a tourist lost in his time warp, lacking the originality and vocal grit to elevate fandom into innovation. He is (as I’ve said before) a karaoke Rod Stewart. His scream on the chorus of “Cry on My Guitar” is nasal and strained, like he's sucking words through a stubbed cigarette. The song’s lyrics are so lazy in their retromania, they might as well have been written by an algorithm. “I cry upon the strings of my guitar,” he rasps, “and everybody tells me that it’s sh-la-la-la-la oh yeah.” One hopes Coup de Grace really is Kane’s parting shot.
