Secret Shine - There Is Only Now

Seit 2006 ist das Quintett aus Bristol wieder aktiv und ließ zwei weitere Alben folgen („All Of The Stars“, 2008, und „The Beginning And The End“, 2010). Aktuell besteht die Band aus Dean Purnell (Gesang, Giatrre), Scott Purnell (Gitarre), Kathryn Smith (Gesang, Keyboards), Jamie Gingell (Bass) sowie Tom Adams (Schlagzeug) und wenn ihre früheren Platten so stark sind wie „There Is Only Now“, dann gehören sie zwingend in meinen Plattenschrank, der immer noch ausreichend Platz für Dreampop / Shoegaze zwischen Slowdive und My Bloody Valentine bietet.

Ich kann mich den Schlussworten der Plattenkritik auf When The Sun Hits nur anschließen: In short, this is a sonic lovefest for all lovers of good shoegaze and dream pop. Highly recommended!

“All In Your Head” is a burst of slow-motion fireworks underpinned by stately keyboard press and tiered male and female vocals harmonies. Grimy guitar line grind contrasts with lushly breathy, aerial vocals on the lyrically stark “Dirty Game”.
A melancholic, post-punk undercurrent runs through the synth-pop clarity and crystal guitar chime of “Drift Away”. Bass line-driven “To The Well” starts with a deliberate pace of a menacing bass line, hushed vocals, and lively percussion before blasting off with shoegaze guitar frisson, glistening keyboard notes, and harmonic vocal effusion. The vast dreamscape expanse of “For You” reveals panoramic introspection that rises to languorously grand heights.
Album-ender “Things I Said” is pop noir, filled with heartbreaking lyrics, gliding keyboard diffusion, propulsive drum beats, and twining, sky-high vocal harmonies.

For fans, it’s always difficult to find new material from a band you grew up listening to and think it better or that it has surpassed the band’s early offerings. Nostalgia is a power thing, especially when it comes to music. However, I’m going to go out on a limb here and state that There is Only Now is the best thing Secret Shine has released to date. From start to finish, this album explodes in slow-moving pop brilliance with all the shoegaze and dreampop accents anyone could ever want. There is Only Now is a must own for any shoegaze fan or, in fact, lover of music in general.
