Cat Power - Covers

Auch Charlyn Marie "Chan" Marshall hat eine alte Idee wieder aufgewärmt: 2000 erschien bereits das Album „The Covers Record“, dem acht Jahre später „Jukebox“ folgen sollte. Dem auf beiden Alben angewandten Konzept bleibt Cat Power auch auf „Covers“ treu: Sie wählt Fremdkompositionen aus unterschiedlichen Jahrzehnten und Musikrichtungen (von Billie Holiday („I’ll Be Seeing You“) über The Pogues („A Pair Of Brown Eyes“) und Nick Cave („I Had A Dream Joe“) bis zu Frank Ocean („Bad Religion“)) nach persönlicher Bedeutung und weniger ob ihres Bekanntheitsgrades aus, macht sich diese durch individuelle Interpretation zu eigen und schreckt dabei auch vor Textänderungen (oder gar Honky Tonk-Musik) nicht zurück. Erneut baut sie auch einen ihrer eigenen Songs in einer neuen Fassung in den Songzyklus ein (in diesem Falle „Unhate“, das ursprünglich „Hate“ hieß und sie auf „The Greatest“ (2006) befindet). 

Bei „Covers“ ist es so, wie es in solchen Fällen häufig ist: ein Fest für Fans.

„Covers“ steht ab dem 14. Januar in den Plattenläden und zwar als black Vinyl oder in den limitierten Auflagen (silver Vinyl oder golden Vinyl mit zusätzlicher 7’’ Single und ihrer Interpretation von „You Got The Silver“ von The Rolling Stones).

Im Sommer wird Cat Power auch für zwei Konzerte nach Deutschland kommen:

They are all heavy songs, and you’d imagine no less from Cat Power. And they are all beautiful and raw and acoustic guitar heavy, as you’d imagine from Cat Power as well. Anyone who is already a Cat Power fan, I think, will thrill at this collection of songs and this look into Marshall’s soul. She’s not in this to cash in on other people’s creations or introduce her listeners to artists she thinks needs exposure, it is clear, but simply to give a window into her soul. This could have been a “songs I wish I wrote” sort of album, and it’s a delight to see what songs she picks. All of these songs, if you didn’t know they were covers, could certainly have been written from her own desperate and empowered pen. But her covers are now the world’s to hear. Another side to Chan Marshall, I’m glad I’ve seen.
