Jordan Klassen - Big Intruder

What I love about Jordan’s music is that it can be poppy yet hauntingly beautiful for some of them. It doesn’t feel all smug like some indie music can come across sometimes. “Yer Cure” stands out because of the orchestral arrangement from the start of it. It then goes into echoey, indie track that has that 70s Euro feel to it again. It’s the little things like the background instruments that makes me feel that way. The title track “Big Intruder” is a multi-layered song that has the same style for a few minutes, then stops and goes into another style. I liked the last part of the song when it changes direction. It’s funny, it’s reminds me of the song “Black Sheep” from Walk Hard. A song where Dewey Cox was just experimenting with everything, poking fun at Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys during his Pet Sounds days.(ReadJunk)

The album opens with ‘Hard To Please’ which starts very simply with just a 2 chord guitar riff and beautiful falsetto vocals. The textures slowly build with an interesting but subtle bass which I find really compelling. Klassen has been compared to Noah and the Whale by critics before, which is noticeable in this song. The music in ‘The Same Thing Over and Over’ act as a kind of oxymoron to the lyrics in this song. Although it is still fairly cheery sounding, there is something strangely eerie about it which is confirmed by the lyrics “the lights around you fade” and “If these pills will cut the edge, I’ll take them till I’m dead”. Something about this song doesn’t quite sit right with me, but as just a passing tune without much thought it’s still nice listening. (…)The whole album is really easy listening, perfect for those chilly autumn walks to work each morning. It demonstrates his unique blend of choral-fused folk nicely and each track contains a different sound and feature from the last. (MCR Live)
