10 Fakten zum neuen Album von The Divine Comedy:
1. „Office Politics“ (2019) war das zwölfte und bisher letzte Studioalbum von The Divine Comedy, das vor 6 Jahren, 3 Monaten und 8 Tagen veröffentlicht wurde. Das ist ein neuer negativer Rekord, denn zwischen den Veröffentlichungen von „Bang Goes The Knighthoood“ (2010) und „Foreverland“ (2016) lagen 5 Tage weniger.
2. So ganz ohne neue Musik mussten die Fans aber nicht ausharren, denn auf der Compilation „Charmed Life – The Best of the Divine Comedy“ (2022) gab es mit „The Best Mistakes“ eine neue Single zu hören und in der limitierten Auflage elf weitere unveröffentlichte Songs. Zudem komponierte Neil Hannon die Soundtracks zu den Filmen „LOLA“ (2022) und Wonka“ (2023).
3. „Office Politics“ war übrigens das erste Studioalbum von The Divine Comedy, das die UK Top 5 erreichte. In Deutschland reichte es zu Rang 51, hier ist „Foreverland“ (2016; #41) der Rekordhalter.
The songs are all elegant and cerebral, frequently wandering into a music hall-esque, light opera. Taking in subjects like the loss of his dad, bit by bit, to dementia; stupid arguments with his wife; and his daughter leaving home and spreading her wings. However, they are far from glum and miserable. “The Man Who Turned into a Chair” is a baroque pop song to lost youthful energy, while his mature hymn to love, “I Want You” could easily appear in Nick Cave’s setlist one of these days. “All the Pretty Lights” is a jaunty, Noel Harrison-like reminiscence of a childhood visit to the bright lights of central London and “Down the Rabbit Hole” is a gentle Roald Dahl-flavoured psychedelic trip.Rainy Sunday Afternoon isn’t all about tales of nostalgia though and “Mar-A-Lago by the Sea” is a humorous poke at the ridiculous crassness of President Tiny Hands and his palace with “All that ostentatious wealth / the pictures of myself” and of “swapping wives for beauty queens” while “entertaining fascist leaches”. Indeed, Hannon’s gentle wit is still very much to the fore throughout and while Rainy Sunday Afternoon is unlikely to ensnare a new audience for the Divine Comedy, it will certainly keep Hannon’s existing crowd more than happy.
4. „Rainy Sunday Afternoon“ bietet 11 Songs in 42:54 Minuten und ist seit dem 15. September als CD, Kassette und LP (black BioVinyl) erhältlich. Eine limitierte Auflage der CD bietet mit „Live in Paris & London“ einen weiteren Silberling mit „deep cuts and fan favourites“ seiner Konzerte aus dem Jahr 2022.
5. Die limitierten Auflagen der Schallplatte kommt auf dark green BioVinyl bzw. dark red Vinyl daher. Außerdem gibt es für rund 70€ ein Deluxe LP Book, die (neben der erwähnten Live CD, folgendes beinhaltet: The album on black BioVinyl in an inner sleeve with artwork and lyrics, a 20 page behind the scenes look at the making of ‘Rainy Sunday Afternoon’ at Abbey Road with text from Neil, the band and engineer Tom Bailey, illustrated throughout with fly on the wall photos by Kevin Westenberg and the band alongside extracts from Neil’s lyric notebooks.
6. „Achilles“ wurde als erste Single aus „Rainy Sunday Afternoon“ ausgekoppelt, schaffte aber nicht den Sprung in die UK Single Charts. Dies gelang zuletzt „At The Indie Disco“ (2010; #173). Der größte Hit von The Divine Comedy stammt aus dem letzten Jahrtausend: „National Express“ (1999) war die einzige Top Ten Single (#8).
7. Der zweite veröffentliche Song trägt den Titel „The Last Time I Saw The Old Man“. Thematisch dreht es sich um Neil Hannons Vater, der an Alzheimer erkrankte und verstarb.
8. Ein tatsächliches Video erhielt aber erst der dritte vorab veröffentlichte Song „Invisible Thread“, der das Album abschließt und auf dem Neil Hannons Tochter Willow mitsingt:
9. „Rainy Sunday Afternoon“ wurde im Herbst 2024 in den Abbey Road Studios aufgenommen und beschäftigt sich mit Themen wie Sterblichkeit, Erinnerungen, Beziehungen, politische und soziale Umbrüche. Neil Hannon hat alle Songs komponiert und produziert sowie (mit Hilfe von Andrew Skeet) arrangiert. Mit „All The Pretty Lights“ gibt es - nach „Christmas With The Hannons“ und „Home For The Holidays“ - den dritten Weihnachtssong von The Divine Comedy.
10. The Divine Comedy werden als Septett drei Konzerte in Deutschland spielen. Das sind die Termine:
