The Ironweed Project - Dust Bowl

In unseren Breiten eher unter dem Namen "Wolfsmilchgewächse" bekannt, kommt diese Pflanzenfamilie auf einige Tausend Arten. Ähnlich bunt ist auch dieses Album. Blues- und Rock-Riffs treffen auf vielfältige Rhythmen, die auch vor Funk-, Drum and bass- und Hip Hop- Anleihen nicht zurückschrecken. Everlast scheint an einigen Stellen durch, Soul-Stimmen und vereinzelte Country-Klänge komplettieren das "Leipziger Allerlei" aus Manchester. Skeptisch? Den roten Faden bildet dabei Aniff Akinolas Stimme, die an Barry White & Co. erinnert. Und diese Stimme hält das Konstrukt locker zusammen. Auf dem Album findet sich so gut wie alles, abgesehen von Langweile.

Fabriziert hat das Aniff Akinola weitgehend im Alleingang. Bislang trug er u. a. zur Musik von The Beloved, The Orb und Urban Cookie Collective bei. Die altehrwürdige BBC meint dazu:

Dust Bowl is a suitably eclectic and exciting collection. Drum and bass beats underpin heavy blues vocals, drifting fairytales meander over slabs of bass and through it all, his own rich, deep and delicious timbre runs like treacle through the mix.[...] Apparently, Aniff’s aim for the album was to produce something that challenge people’s perceptions of music and genre. He has more than achieved that and, most impressively, he’s done it with an album that is up there with the best of Manchester’s debuts.

Ich stolperte im Rahmen der SXSW-Berichte über den Song "Down to my grave". Diesen gibt es hier und auf Myspace als Download. Dort warten natürlich auch andere Songs jeweils als Stream. Eine Website zum Album gibt es eigentlich auch, die scheint aber aktuell Berufsschule zu haben, vielleicht kommt sie ja bald wieder.

Erhältlich ist "Dust Bowl" z. B. direkt beim Label, für 5 Pfund als Demoversion (leider ohne Cover, aber dafür inkl. Versand). Das Album gibt es unter dem Titel "The Dust Bowl Instrumentals" zusätzlich als (Überraschung!) Instrumentalversion. Die Instrumentalversionen wurden vorab veröffentlicht und wirkten als Lockmittel für mögliche Kollaborationen, die es dann auf "Dust Bowl" schafften.

Und wenn ich schon so offen für das Label werbe, darf ich auch deren Beschreibung zum Album übernehmen:

Seeking inspiration for his latest venture, Aniff appears to have taken the same trip to the Mississippi crossroads as legendary bluesman Robert Johnson, but rather than sell his soul to Satan, he merely passed him a bottle of Bourbon and the pair bonded over a love of George Clinton, The KLF and the Delta Blues. Just as Johnson returned from the crossroads as the greatest bluesman in the Delta, Aniff returns home (his soul still intact) a transformed man - an electro-bluesman for the 21st century Ironweed. His debut album for Fat Northerner records, aptly titled Dustbowl drags traditional blues kickin an howlin into the electronic age. Containing seventeen tracks of beautifully drawled dustbowl vocals set to twanging guitars, funky horns and skittering breakbeats, the album recalls Odelay-era Beck (Perfect Day), The Fun Lovin Criminals (Get on the Floor) and even the Stone Roses on the slowed-down psychedelic krautrock groove of Lovemakers.
