James Walsh - It’s Happening

Kinder, wie die zeit vergeht! Im Herbst feiert „Love Is Here“, das Debütalbum von Starsailor, bereits seinen 25. Geburtstag! Dieses Jubiläum feiert die Band, die 2024 mit „Where The Wild Things Grow“ ihr aktuelles Album veröffentlichte, mit eine Tour, auf der das Debüt selbstverständlich im Mittelpunkt stehen wird.

  

Der umtriebige James Walsh, Sänger und Gitarrist von Starsailor, kann aber wohl nicht anders, als zwischendurch weiter Songs zu komponieren und aufzunehmen. So kommt er mittlerweile, trotz Veröffentlichungen und Tourneen seiner Hauptband, auf sieben Soloalben in den letzten 14 Jahren. „It’s Happening“ wurde von Walsh im Alleingang geschrieben, in seinem Home Studio eingespielt und produziert. Der Singer/Songwriter präsentiert elf höchst reduzierte, zurückhaltende und warme Folk-Songs, in denen sich zu seinem Gesang und akustischem Gitarrenspiel nur pointiert Percussion, Piano oder E-Gitarre gesellen. Als Anspieltipps oder Highlights würde ich „Rachel“, auf dem Walsh die tragische Geschichte der Aktivistin Rachel Corrie, die im Gazastreifen bei ihrer Arbeit für die Internationale Solidaritätsbewegung getötet wurde, erzählt, und „Coney Island“ herausstellen.

„It’s Happening“ erscheint über das griechische Label Green Cookie Records als CD und LP (limitiert auf 200 Exemplare). 

 

Standouts include the heart-tingling ‘Loving You’: raw, tender, and infinitely relatable. There’s a spark of new love here, but it’s tinged with the bittersweet ache that only he can capture. ‘Shadows’ follows suit, diving into introspection and memory with lyrical clarity, turning personal reflection into something universally felt.

Walsh’s brilliance shines brightest when he pares things back. ‘Broken Days’ hums with weary hope, a meditation on holding on without fanfare, while closing track ‘Firefly Moments’ is the emotional apex: fleeting glimpses of beauty captured with serene, almost reverent precision. Inspired by Abi Morgan’s ‘This Is Not A Pity’, it lingers long after the final note. (…)

‘It’s All Happening’ sees James at his most intimate – alone in his studio, shaping mood and emotion as he always does – superbly!

There’s no need for fireworks or theatrics, this is a record that lingers; that resonates long after the music ends. It’s a powerful reminder that Walsh’s songwriting remains as sharp and emotionally honest as ever, capturing both personal truths and universal emotions, with unparalleled clarity.
