Vor zwei Jahren erreichte Marika Hackman für „Big Sigh“ 7,500 Punkte und landete auf Platz 50 bei Platten vor Gericht. Warum das bei der Vorstellung von „Lean In“ erwähnt wird? Weil Art School Girlfriend das musikalische Projekt von Polly Louise Mackey ist, welche mit Marika Hackman verheiratet ist.
Die walisische Musikerin, Songwriterin und Produzentin spielte früher in einer Shoegaze-Band namens Deaf Club, fokussierte sich aber nach deren Auflösung auf Art School Girlfriend und andere Musikrichtungen. Das erste Album „Is It Light Where You Are“ (2021) erschien über Wolf Tone, das Label des Produzenten Paul Epworth. Der Nachfolger, „Soft Landing“ (2023), sowie das neue Album kamen über Fiction Records heraus.
„Lean In“ wurde in Polly Mackeys eigenem Studio in East London von ihr selbst produziert. Sie kombiniert auf den 10 Songs Indie Rock, Elektropop, Dreampop und Electronica, so dass ich beim Hören an The xx und Beach House denken musste. Marika Hackman ist am Piano und bei den Backing Vocals zu hören, beim Golden Leaves Festival wird sie vermutlich auch mit auf der Bühne stehen.
But she comes bursting out of that cocoon with the giddy house pulse of the album’s second track, “L.Y.A.T.T.” (Love You All The Time). The danceable positivity of the track hymns the security of love in unstable times. “On the days that we don't speak that much at all,” Mackey sings. “When your mind is moving somewherе I can't go/ It's a kick inside that's deep enough to know/ I know that I love you all the time.”Similar assurances, anchored by a gothic sludge of electric guitar, underpin the “The Peaks”, with its simple chorus assurances of, “I won’t leave”. Mackey’s relationship with indie folk singer/songwriter Marika Hackman (who she married in 2024) has been described as “the stuff of gay indie pop legend”; fans will surely rejoice at this possible insight into their life together.
