Die erste Vorladung (V-MMXXVI)

Personalien:

Aus London stammt das Trio Deary, das aus Ben Easton (Gitarre), Rebecca ‚Dottie‘ Cockram (Gesang, Gitarre) und Harry Catchpole (Schlagzeug) besteht und seinen Bandnamen gern kleingeschrieben sieht.

Tathergang:

deary gründeten sich während der COVID-Pandemie, als Ben Easton für eine musikalische Neuausrichtung von einem gemeinsamen Freund die Sängerin Dottie Cockram empfohlen bekam. Man lernte sich kennen, sprach über die gemeinsame Liebe zu Cocteau Twins, Slowdive und My Bloody Valentine, freundete sich an und gründete eine Band. Seit 2023 veröffentlichten sie über Sonic Cathedral erste Musik, erst im letzten Jahr stieß Harry Catchpole am Schlagzeug.

In Brighton und London nahmen deary als Trio die 11 Songs ihres Debütalbums auf, das sie auch selbst produzierten. Dabei wurden sie von Iggy B (Piroshka, Spiritualized, 2:54) unterstützt, der oftmals Künstler*innen ihres neuen Labels Bella Union Records im Studion betreut. 

„Birding“ ist als CD und LP (black Vinyl, clear Vinyl, sky blue and green marble Vinyl) Anfang April veröffentlicht worden. 

Plädoyer:

Dottie Cockrams ätherischer Gesang lässt an Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins) oder Harriet Wheeler (The Sundays) denken, wodurch man schnell beim Label Dreampop („Garden Of Eden“) wäre. Hinzu kommen die verhallten Gitarrenwände von Easton und das teils wuchtige (und gelegentlich Trip Hop-artige („No Sweeter Feeling“) Schlagzeug von Catchpole, so dass Slowdive („Alma“) oder My Bloody Valentine („Smile“) in die Shoegaze-Richtung deuten. 

Zeugen:

Opener “Smile” and single “Seabird” feature subtle hooks that soar above a rhythmic drive that keeps the ethereal textures from drifting too far into ambient territory, while “Blue Ribbon” and “Alma” sound Lush-like as a beautiful mix of peppy beats are served over a swirling wash of sound with a distinctive blend of sweetness and fragility.

Elsewhere, the production allows the arrangements to breathe, trading in buoyant dynamics for a breezy, melodic openness. “Gypsophilia” and “Birding” are prime examples of ethereal dreamscapes that sparkle with a relaxed air.

Birding doesn’t rewrite the rulebook of dream-pop or invent a new tonal language, and may not be as innovative or groundbreaking as Cocteau Twins or Slowdive records; however, it offers a wealth of familiar joys that captures the classic 4AD shimmer without the experimental opaque-ness, and is just as rewarding a listen as the classics that inspired it.
