Die erste Vorladung (VII-MMXXVI)

Personalien:

Sam Baldwin und Jack Nielsen lernten sich wohl 2018 in einer Kneipe in Brighton kennen und gründeten zusammen die Band Thrillhouse. 

Beim Bandnamen hätte das Duo etwas besser aufpassen müssen, denn in den USA wählten bereits zuvor eine Heavy Band und ein DJ diesen Namen aus. 

Tathergang:

2023 veröffentlichten unsere Thrillhouse mit „Something About This Place“ ihr Debütalbum, das ihnen Vergleiche zu The National und Arcade Fire sowie Support von BBC Introducing, Radio X und KEXP einbrachte. Beim Indie-Label Spirit of Spike Island aus Manchester ist nun der Nachfolger „Smile“ (Ocean Blue Vinyl, Glowing Sun Red Vinyl) erschienen. 

Einer schwarze Leoparden-Dame aus Sibirien, die auf Instagram wohl über 6 Millionen Follower hat, gefällt wohl der Song „Wanna See You Smile“ besonders, denn sie unterlegte eines ihrer Videos mit der Musik von Thrillhouse. Wäre ja schön für Sam Baldwin und Jack Nielsen, wenn sich die Millionen Klicks auch hinsichtlich ihrer eigenen Musik auszahlen würden und sie neben Luna the Pantera noch weitere Fans hinzu gewinnen könnten.

Plädoyer:

Thrillhouse-Frontmann Sam Baldwin befand sich in einer persönlichen Krise, als er mit den Arbeiten an dem Album begann. Geplagt von einer Trennung und einer Reihe von Verlusten, flossen diese Emotionen in seine Kompositionen ein. Damit einher ging auch ein musikalischer Wandel, denn der Indiepop mit 80ies-Referenzen (The Cure, Echo & The Bunnymen, Talking Heads) hat sich eindeutig in Richtung Folk und Folkrock verschoben, so dass man beim Hören von „Smile“ viel häufiger an Tom Petty, Bob Dylan, The Travelling Wilburys, The War On Drugs oder Mumford & Sons denken muss. Ich hätte mir mehr Songs wie „I'll Still Be There“ gewünscht, dertatsächlich nach The Cure trifft Shout Out Louds trifft Arcade Fire klingt.

Zeugen:

Opening track ‘Wanna See You Smile’ displays a greater lever of maturity and pose than their earlier material: coasting on a gentle dappling instrumentation and an indelible melody infused with a degree of melancholy and ethereal backing vocals. As almost the title track, it’s a warm embrace, welcoming you into their world.

‘See You’ has an alt. country delivery, upbeat with wailing guitars and the distinct vibrant vocals of Baldwin with an added twang, while ‘I’ll Still Be There’ drifts into a new wave sparkle, reminding me a little of the greatly underrated band Thrashing Doves, with Baldwin’s urgent vocals and the anthemic delivery, cinematic and hair-raising. Thrillhouse have an inherent ability to deliver the most buoyant and sparkling tracks that combine a degree of hyperactivity with a pop sensibility that positively shimmers. The band is beginning to get the respect it deserves after years of creative output. They marry an accomplished musicianship with a precise scientific ear for melody and rhythm.
