Die 24-jährige Delaney Bailey wuchs in Indiana in einer Großfamilie mit sieben Geschwistern auf. Sie studierte Design an der Indiana University Bloomington und lebt und arbeitet zurzeit in Chicago.

Tathergang:

Während ihres Studiums veröffentlichte Delaney Bailey 2020 in Eigenregie ihre ersten Singles und erreichte über Plattformen wie TikTok größere Bekanntheit. Das Label Clean Slate wurde auf sie aufmerksam und veröffentlichte 2022 mit „(I Would Have Followed You)“ ein erstes Mini-Album. Der Opener „J's Lullaby (Darlin' I'd Wait For You)“ darf als ihr großer Hit bezeichnet werden, denn allein bei Spotify sind mehr als 143 000 000 Streams für diesen Song verbucht.

Am 21. Januar 2026 folgte mit „Concave“ ihr Debütalbum. Im Gegensatz zu ihren früheren, eher akustischen Balladen, nutzt sie hier eine vollere Produktion mit Drums, Synthesizern und vielschichtigen Vocals. Thematisch behandelt sie Ängste vor dem Älterwerden, Identität und Familiengeschichten. Das Album, bei dem Bailey die volle kreative Kontrolle hatte, wurde über AWAL Recordings veröffentlicht. Freunde der Schallplatte können „Concave“ als Sea Blue Vinyl käuflich erwerben.

Plädoyer:

Der Gothic-Look, denn die Homepage und das Plattencover ausstrahlen, weist ein wenig in die falsche Richtung, denn Delaney Bailey bewegt sich zwischen zartem Folk, unheilvollem Indiepop und entrücktem Dreampop. Das Ergebnis lässt sehr stark an Azure Ray denken, ist aber durch den geschickten Einsatz von E-Gitarre, Drums und elektronischen Sounds abwechslungsreicher gestaltet. Als Beispiele hierfür seien „Lion“ und „Retainer“ genannt. Den Stimmverzerrer auf „Wake Up“ hätte sie aber besser schlummern lassen.

(…) an album where she seems to care very little about neat musical labels and genres, covering a vast ground between dream pop and everything else, keeping that introspective music and lyrics concept fully intact.

And she may be doing it all instinctively, but she seems to have a deep musical background that she has transformed into music of her own with such ease. The previous three EPs that went so well both with critics and the streaming audience certainly did help, but Concave, although formally a debut, presents an artist with a fully developed vision that knows exactly how to give it a shape and form that will reach the audiences.

Intimate, chilling and spectral.

Delaney Bailey’s Concave is hauntingly beautiful. Each track indelibly brings new versions of Bailey to the table, going from eerie echoes to subdued and earnest lyrics to heavy vocal distortion with ease.
