BirdPen - All Function One

Der BUND hat bereits vor einiger Zeit berichtet, dass der BIRDPEN, eine Art Filzstift, mit der für Menschen unsichtbare UV-Markierungen auf Glasscheiben vorgenommen werden können, um Vogelschlag an Glas zu verhindern, wirkungslos ist.

Also lieber das Geld sparen und in das neue Album von BirdPen investieren!

Mike Bird und Dave Pen sind die Namensgeber der Band und aufgrund deren unterschiedlicher Wohnorte (Schweden bzw. England) gestalteten sich während der Pandemie die Aufnahmen für ihr sechstes Album gar nicht so leicht. Zumindest die Themenfindung gestaltete sich nicht besonders schwer, denn „All Function One“ ist ein Album über Isolation, digitale Traurigkeit, Einsamkeit, Paranoia und ein modernes Cyber-Leben und damit sehr zeitgeistig. Auf die Musik trifft dies nicht unbedingt zu, denn BirdPen bedienen mit ihrem düster-atmosphärischen Alternative Rock weiterhin Fans von Doves oder Radiohead. Eine Nähe zu Archive ergibt sich automatisch, da Mike Pen auch Sänger und Gitarrist dieser Band ist, jedoch ist sein zweites Projekt deutlich weniger elektronisch gehalten. Die sich langsam aufbauenden Songs des Albums, wie etwa „Flames“, zu denen sich auch häufig Streicher gesellen, lassen auch an Arcade Fire denken, auch wenn auf die euphorischen, mitreißenden Oooh-Chöre hier verzichtet wird. Die großen Konzerthallen und Stadien werden somit weiterhin auf BirdPen warten müssen. 

„All Function One“ bietet 12 Songs in 49 Minuten, ist ein sehr gelungenes Album von BirdPen und als Sunflower Yellow Vinyl käuflich zu erwerben.

 

First things first, this BirdPen album is a classic grower and do persevere with your listening as it is a fine piece of music. Sure, there are some instant hits like ‘Modern Junk’, as near as they get to pop in the commercial sense of the meaning. Otherwise BirdPen go down various musical avenues, taking in electronica on ‘Flames’ and the fairly weird and wonderful it has to be said on ‘Blackhole’.

‘Changes’, with its monotone vocals, is very stark and highlights how much we depend upon and are in many ways, controlled by technology. ‘Universe’ is at the more uplifting end of the scale, although to be fair it is hardly that upbeat! The hypnotic guitar on ‘Invisible’ makes this song shine, proof that BirdPen are more than just an electronica based band.

All Function One is very much an album symbolic of its time and place as we all continue to face challenges in our day to day lives. Its narrative speaks clearly of isolation, loneliness, paranoia, the impact of a modern cyber life and a sense of emotional turmoil that I am sure most of us will have experienced over recent months. BirdPen really have tapped into a wide spectrum of atmospheric sounds and bleak imagery to convey a sense of fear and anxiety whilst also recognising there may be some hope beyond our current confines.

Strangely it appears that BirdPen are more widely acknowledged across the European continent than in their own backyard in the UK so there is still much to unlock from their undoubted potential. It may be that All Function One is just the album to do that and you are well-advised to have a listen.
