The Slow Readers Club - The Joy Of The Return

Schön, wenn sich Band und Fans auf eine Rückkehr freuen können, auch wenn The Slow Readers Club nicht in einer Liga mit den Editors spielen, weil sie vielleicht nicht so einen charismatischen Frontmann wie Tom Smith haben oder noch nicht auf einen so reichhaltig mit Hits ausgestatteten Backkatalog zurückblicken können.  

Aber nun ist das 2009 gegründete Quartett aus Manchester mit seinem vierten Album „The Joy Of The Return“ zurück und nachdem mit dem Vorgänger „Build A Tower“ vor zwei Jahren erstmals die britischen Charts erreicht werden konnten (#18), darf man davon ausgehen, dass zumindest der Aufstieg in eine gemeinsame Liga mit den White Lies erfolgt ist.

Somit ist das musikalische Spektrum auch schon recht deutlich abgesteckt: energetischer, tanzbarer Indierock mit einer Prise Post-Punk. „All I Hear“, „Every Word“ oder „Killing Me“ werden sicherlich auf Konzerten bei Festivalauftritten und in der Indie-Disco für Begeisterung sorgen. Gelegentlich, wie bei „Something Missing“ oder „All The Idols“, fühlt man sich auch in die 80er Jahre, zu U2, Echo & the Bunnymen oder Simple Minds, zurückversetzt.   

„The Joy Of The Return“ ist als CD und LP erhältlich, das „Magenta Pink Vinyl“ ist auf 1500 Exemplare limitiert, nur 1000 Exemplare der „Magenta Pink with Black splatter“ LP sind exklusiv über den Shop der Band erhältlich.

A great catchy effort from one of Manchester’s most creative and exemplifies a variety in sounds and instrumentation that carry on the success of their previous record. Get your ears on this one.

It’s an album that, quite assuredly, raises its head above the parapet, combining their trademark indie and alternative stylings with poppier and more muscular compositions. Highlights include “Jericho,” “All the Idols,” and closing track “The Wait.” It all adds up to some of the most immediately compelling indie pop released in a long while.
A surprising and effortless release, The Joy of the Return feels like the start of something big for the band. One only hopes that they can keep this element of surprise going into the future.

The Joy of the Return has more than its fair share of future singles; ‘Problem Child’, ‘Jericho’ and ‘Paris’. This is the album which will propel The Slow Readers Club to the next level of commercial success; prepare to hear them a lot more on the radio.
