Fontaines D.C. - Romance

Sagen wir, wie es ist: Betrachtet man die letzten 5 Jahre, sind Fontaines D.C. die beste Band der Welt. 

Grundlage für diese Aussage ist neben einem beeindruckenden Output („Dogrel“ (2019), „A Hero’s Death“ (2020), „Skinty Fia“ (2022) sowie nun „Romance“ (2024) und dazwischen war mit „Chaos For The Fly“ (2023) noch das Soloalbum des Sängers Grian Chatten erschienen) noch eine beachtliche stilistische Weiterentwicklung, die den rohen Post-Punk des Debüts mittlerweile meilenweit hinter sich gelassen hat.

„Romance“ ist das erste Album der Iren bei XL Recordings, bricht erstmals zusammen mit dem Produzenten James Ford (Arctic Monkeys, Depeche Mode, Blur, Foals) mit dem bandeigenen Credo „if we can’t play it live, let’s not do it“ und ist der Höhepunkt dieser Entwicklung.

So spielt „Starbuster“ mit Elementen aus Trip Hop und Hip Hop und klingt nach dem besten Unkle-Song seit Ewigkeiten, mit Streichern versehen hätte es die Größe von „Lonely Soul“. Aber die Sache mit den Streichern haben sich Fontaines D.C. ja für die Bombast-Ballade „In The Modern World“ aufgehoben. „Motorcycle Boy“ ist noch cineastischer und ausgeklügelter im Sound geraten. Im Mittelteil von „Romance“ wird plötzlich die akustische Gitarre zum wichtigsten Instrument. Bei „Sundowner“ übernimmt Gitarrist Connor Curley den Lead Gesang, Bassist Connor Deegan III unterstützt Grian Chatten auf „In The Modern World“ als zweite Stimme und wie beim Vorgänger gibt es vielfach spannende Gesangsharmonien zu entdecken („Desire“, „Sundowner“). Post-Punk können sie immer noch (Here’s The Thing“, „Death Kink“), aber plötzlich auch melodischen Gitarrenpop („Favourite“, „Bug“) und Grunge („Death Kink“). Wo soll das denn noch hinführen?

Das Artwork des Albums und der Singles stammt übrigens von der taiwanesischen Künstlern Lulu Lin, deren Kunstwerke dieses Jahr auch schon die Platten(n) von Walt Disco zierten.

„Romance“ steht aktuell bei Metacritic bei 92/100 Punkten und ist als CD, Kassette und LP (black Vinyl, clear Vinyl, pink Vinyl) erhältlich. Zudem gibt es eine limitierte Doppel-LP auf schwarzem Vinyl (triple Gatefold).

It felt indicative of how ‘Romance’ is the band’s most considered and intricately crafted release yet, dotted with wide-ranging allusions to decay (a cascading ‘Sundowner’), apocalyptic visions and all the ghosts who have passed through their lives (‘Death Kink’). ‘Romance’ offers moments of wonder and gravity while also feeling occasionally foreboding.

Romance is more straightforwardly approachable than any Fontaines DC album to date – you can easily imagine Desire provoking an immense crowd into singing along. But it doesn’t sacrifice any of the band’s potency in the process: thrillingly, it still carries the same grimy, careworn, aggressive qualities as their previous work. There’s clearly currently an opening for an alternative guitar band to tip over into festival headlining, arena-packing territory. Romance definitely sounds like a band applying to fill said vacancy, but it’s no craven lunge for mass acceptance: it invites a bigger audience into Fontaines DC’s world, but it never begs them to accept. You suspect they’ll take up the offer regardless.

Musical allusions are fired indiscriminately into the crowd, though the album never errs remotely on pastiche: pinpointing Nirvana amidst Fontaines’ lean-in to grunge entirely, while The Cure, Placebo, The Smiths all exist in the liminal space at the fringes of the album’s downtempo captures; even Lana Del Rey on In the Modern World, call-and-response with amorous background vocals included. Sharing its name with the album, the opening track offers an almost inverted instrumentation of the Us trailer’s orchestral take on Luniz’s 5 On It, surging to whiplashing orchestral hits reserved for the advertisement of horror films.
