Lanterns On The Lake - Versions Of Us

Bereits vor ihrem hoch gelobten und für den Mercury Prize nominierten letzten Album „Spook The Herd“ (2020) rettete möglicherweise nur eine längere Auszeit die Lanterns On The Lake. Und auch nun knirschte es während der Aufnahmen zu ihrer fünften Platte wieder im Getriebe der Band (von psychischen und persönlichen Problemen ist die Rede), so dass letztendlich ihr Schlagzeuger und Gründungsmitglied Oliver Ketteringham nach über 15 Jahren seine Sachen packte.

Das verbliebene Quartett - Hazel Wilde (Gesang, Gitarre, Piano), Paul Gregory (Gitarre), Bob Allan (Bass) und Angela Chan (Geige, Cello) - verwarf die bisherigen Aufnahmen, kehrte zu den ursprünglichen Demoaufnahmen zurück und verdankte es den Impulsen des eingesprungenen Radiohead-Schlagzeuger Philip Selway, dass „Versions Of Us“ in der nun vorliegenden Fassung fertig gestellt wurde.   

Auf dem weniger zerbrechlich wirkenden Album überwiegen nun die druckvollen, vielschichtigen Indierock-Songs gegenüber den entrückten, atmosphärischen Dreampop-Liedern. Die Stimme von Hazel Wilde tritt deutlicher und kraftvoller hervor, was möglicherweise auch thematisch begründet ist, da sich ihre Perspektive als Texterin aufgrund ihrer Mutterschaft und einer veränderten Sicht auf die Welt grundlegend verändert hat. 

„Versions Of Us“ ist seit Anfang Juni als CD und LP (translucent orange Vinyl) erhältlich. 

 

Paul and Hazel’s guitar work is bursting with invention and on ‘Vatican’ the playing brings in some stylish interjections between jazzy laid out chords that allow Hazel to carry the song. One of the strongest melodies permeates the lush ‘String Theory’ and your ears will be caressed with some lovely velvety tones from the guitars. The arrangements at the end of the track are wonderful and widescreen, not to mention pure heart breaking. ‘Thumb of War’ is a grandiose and shimmering beauty of a track, with sweeping guitar work that reminds me of Bernard Butler in his Suede days. Lanterns On The Lake sure know how to create a wall of sound and there’s an incredible amount of layers to every song. (…)

The songs are superbly crafted, and every play reveals new details and layers appear you’d not detected before. It’s not just an audiophile’s dream though, the melodies have been carefully crafted and there is an abundance of memorable hooks throughout. The time has come for Lanterns On The Lake to elevate to arena status, Versions Of Us is just exceptional, it really is.

Versions Of Us is a majestic career peak record from a band that has evolved constantly over more than a decade. It’s their fifth and most focused sounding album despite the difficulties in making it. The production belies being done in a bedroom, at points the instrumentation sounds widescreen and big budget without losing sight of where it’s come from. Lyrically, it’s raw, honest and painfully open at parts, a catharsis being used to make sense of what’s gone on and how to recover from it.
