Marlody - I’m Not Sure At All

Düstere Texte treffen auf sanften, oft verschachtelten Harmoniegesang und hoffnungsvolle Melodien. Diese perlen aus dem Keyboard heraus, werden von der Pianistin Jennifer Rowan gespielt und gelegentlich von programmierten Percussions begleitet. Am spannendsten pluckern diese im Song „Friends in Low Places“.

Der Gegensatz zwischen Musik und Text offenbart sich vielleicht am deutlichsten im munter dahin hüpfenden „Malevolence“, welches den schrecklichen Drang, unentschuldbare Gewalt zu begehen, thematisiert. 

Die erste Single „Summer“ schildert aus der Sicht eines Kindes die Anfänge eines neuen Lebens nach dem Verlust eines Elternteils und wurde von Louder Than War wie folgt gelobt:

This single, Summer, is the first taste of what’s to come as the beauty of the music; the rolling waves of keyboard, the apparently simple vocal melody hit you first, but it’s like a trap. It’s draws you into a darker place. The artist explains, the track is sung from the perspective of a young girl whose mother has died, Summer gives a disturbing, eerie picture of an adult world that’s losing its moorings. The innocence of the child and the sweetness of the music pull us safely through, saving us from the worst of it.

Summer is a perfect example of Marlody’s ability to weave songs so disarming that, for a few minutes, we feel as innocent as the child in the song. For a while, we don’t notice that summer is over. We don’t notice how dark it’s getting.

 

Die aus Ashford, Kent stammende Singer/Songwriterin nimmt ihre Musik unter dem Namen Marlody auf und veröffentlichte ihr Debütalbum am 13. Januar über Skep Wax Records, dem Label von Amelia Fletcher und David Pursey (Heavenly/The Catenary Wires). „I’m Not Sure At All“ ist als CD erhältlich, zudem gibt es eine limitierte Auflage auf white Vinyl.
