The Beths - Jump Rope Gazers

Schnell noch eine zweite neuseeländische Band hinterher: The Beths stammen aus Auckland und das Adjektiv „schnell“ wird auch im Zusammenhang mit ihrer Karriere benötigt, denn zunächst war die 2015 gegründete Band nur so etwas wie ein ambitioniertes Hobby und nach den vielen lobenden Worten für das Debütalbum „Future Me Hates Me“ (2018) und zahlreichen erfolgreichen Konzerten beschloss das Quartett rasch, die Musik zum Vollzeitjob zu machen.  

Die mit einer solchen Entscheidung einhergehenden Selbstzweifel und Ängste werden auch auf ihrem zweiten Album „Jump Rope Gazers“ thematisiert. Nach dem hören der 10 Songs kann man diese aber nicht teilen und darf The Beths beruhigen. Ihrem eingängige, schrammelnden Indierock mit Harmoniegesang („I’m Not Getting Excited“, „Dying To Believe“, „Mars, The God Of War“) fügen sie nun eine ordentliche Portion ruhigen, nachdenklichen Indiepop / New Wave („Jump Rope Gazers“, „Do You Want Me Now“) hinzu, was der Abwechslung aber sehr gut tut. 

Wie beim Debüt, das in unserer Endauswertung vor zwei Jahren Platz 28 (7,5 Punkte) erreichen konnte, kann man auch „Jump Rope Gazers“ als farbige LP (tangerine Vinyl) käuflich erwerben.

The record features plenty of truly beautiful torch songs like "Out of Sight" the type that filled Death Cab’s Plans. “You Are A Beam Of Light” gives the stage over to Stokes’ vocals and an acoustic guitar, accompanied by some stunning harmonies. Here she tries to convince someone that their presence lights up her life, even if they don’t think the same. It’s a lump in the throat moment from a band that’ve only really gone all-out so far.

But they certainly haven’t forgotten how to write those big, excellent tunes filled with hooks and pithy observations. “I’m Not Getting Excited” is an assault of rollicking riffs and ripping drums, while “Don’t Go Away” features a fantastic slow head-banger of an outro. Not a single minute of Jump Rope Gazers is lacking in catchy melodies or that addictive energy.

But the record's strongest moments are when Stokes marries that perspective with the band's volume. I can't think of a finer example than the title track, which would've been a shoo-in for "song of the summer" in some other, less dystopian year. The chorus features a wall of harmonies, shimmering guitar, and a blunt admission: "I think I love you / And I think that I loved you the whole time." At its core, it's a simple pop song, but in the hands of the Beths, even a simple pop song can feel immaculate.
