Craig Armstrong - Sun On You

Das Werk des schottischen Komponisten Craig Armstrong dürfte Kinogängern wohl bekannt sein, so ließ ihn zum Beispiel Baz Luhrman die Soundtracks für „Romeo and Juliet“, „Moulin Rouge“ oder auch „The Great Gatsby“ erstellen. Er arbeitete sowohl fürs Theater (Royal Shakespeare Company) als auch mit zahlreichen Rock-/Popstars zusammen (U2, Massive Attack, Madonna, Pet Shop Boys, Mogwai) und veröffentlichte auf Melankolik, dem Label von Massive Attack, mit „The Space Between Us“ (1998) und „As If To Nothing“ (2002) zwei tolle Soloalben, auf denen Neo-Klassik, Trip Hop und Ambient miteinander verschmelzen und u.a. Elizabeth Fraser (Cocteau Twins), Paul Buchanan (The Blue Nile), Evan Dando (Lemonheads) oder David McAlmont den Songs ihre Stimme leihen.

Auf „Sun O You“, das Anfang September über Decca Records erschienen ist, fehlt leider dieser Aspekt der Arbeit Armstrongs. Die 16 Stücke konzentrieren sich auf Piano und Streicher und gleiten zwischen zeitgenössischer Filmmusik und Klassik dahin. Lediglich von „Marelle“ gibt es eine, auf dem Album nicht enthaltene, Fassung mit Gesang: Guy Garvey von Elbow zeigt mit „Cornflower (Marelle)“, was hier noch hätte möglich sein können…  

The ingredients are, to fans of his earlier work, very familiar: the man himself to the fore on a Yamaha concert grand piano and the musicians of the Scottish Ensemble on all but a few of the tracks. Armstrong would probably make no claims to virtuosity on the keyboard, and the string players are not required to produce anything technically demanding either, although it is a measure of their accomplishment that every single note of it sounds precisely correct in terms of colour and timbre. This music is chiefly about atmosphere, but there are tantalising hints of narrative there too, which suggest the album may reveal further aspects of itself on longer acquaintance, and in these technology-drenched times its clarity of focus on natural acoustic sounds is a pure delight.
