Alpaca Sports - From Paris With Love

Der Albumtitel verwirrt zunächst, denn ein schwedisches Duo veröffentlicht auf einem spanischen Label ein Album, das in Zusammenarbeit mit US-amerikanischen Freunden und einem britischen Produzenten entstanden ist. 

Jedoch zog Andreas Johnson, der gemeinsam mit Amanda Åkerman die Band Alpaca Sports bildet, 2016 nach Paris und schrieb dort, beeinflusst von der Stadt und unter Mithilfe von Lisle Mitnik (Fireflies) die Songs, die nun „From Paris With Love“, das zweite reguläre Album der Band bilden. Das Debütalbum „Sealed With A Kiss“ stammt aus dem Jahr 2014, 2015 war über das Label Elefant Records das Mini-Album „When You Need Me The Most“ erschienen, das nun auch „From Paris With Love“ als weiße, auf 500 Stück limitierte Schallplatte herausbringt. Neben Lisle Mitnik (u.a. Keyboards, Gitarre, Bass) sind auf der Platte, die Ian Catt (Saint Etienne, The Field Mice, Trembling Blue Stars) in London produzierte, Gary Olson (Ladybug Transistor) an der Trompete und Hampus Öhman-Frölund am Schlagzeug zu hören, was diese zur konsequenten Fortsetzung von „When You Need Me The Most“ werden lässt, die auch die vom japanischen Illustrator Ray Kimura gestalteten Plattenhülle mit einbezieht.

„From Paris With Love“ ist mit seiner eingängigen Mixtur aus Indiepop und Twee nicht nur die beste Veröffentlichung von Alpaca Sports, sondern auch die stärkste Platte aus diesem Genre im Jahrgang 2018. Freunden von Camera Obscura, Club 8, The Field Mice, The Lucksmiths und Throw That Beat In The Garbeacan wärmstens zu empfehlen!

Most of the record consists of gently swaying, midtempo love songs sung with wide-eyed innocence by Jonsson; tracks like "Feel Like Going Home" and "A New Boyfriend" have a light touch that sounds a bit like the Lucksmiths at their breeziest. They also mix in quiet ballads ("Baby What Can I Say?"), sparkling disco ("Summer Days"), bouncy sunshine pop ("Eiffel Tower"), and even a few tracks with some punch (the almost rocking "Without You" and the Motown-inspired "Saddest Girl in the World"). This time out, Åkerman adds her usual angelic backing vocals, but also gets a chance to sing a couple leads and definitely makes the most of it on the very pretty and sad acoustic ballad "Birds" and "Luxembourg Gardens," another slow one that drifts and floats like an indie pop take on 10cc's "I'm Not in Love" and ends the album on a powerfully emotional note. This song, and a few others, show a little more depth than previous efforts, and when paired with the excellent work of Alpaca Sports' collaborators, it makes for a listening experience that does more than just warm hearts and inspire smiles; it leaves a mark. They would be well served by delving even deeper into sadder, darker feelings next time out, but even if they don't, they've still made one heck of a nice album and fans of indie pop could do a whole lot worse than From Paris with Love.
