Grouplove - Healer

Ach, war das toll, als Grouplove 2011 hier mit ihrem Debütalbum „Never Trust A Happy Song“ begeistern und mit 7,4375 Punkten Platz 43 der Jahres-Charts erklimmen konnten. Den leicht schrägen Indierock mit packenden Melodien, der an Violent Femmes, Fanfarlo oder Talking Heads denken ließ, verloren Grouplove danach etwas aus den Augen, so dass „Spreading Rumours“ (2013) mit 5,667 Punkten und das folgende, mit Synth-Pop flirtende „Big Mess“ (2016) mit 6,0 Punkten die Plattenrichter nicht überzeugen konnten.

Mittlerweile sind vier Jahre vergangen, der Drummer (Ryan Rabin) hat die Band verlassen und wurde durch Benjamin Homola ersetzt, die sich den Gesang und das Privatleben teilenden Hannah Hooper (Keyboards) und Christian Zucconi (Gitarre) haben zusammen ein Kind bekommen und nun gibt es auch das vierte Album der Band, die von Andrew Wessen (Gitarre) und Daniel Gleason (Bass) vervollständigt wird. Gemeinsam mit den Produzenten Dave Sitek (TV On The Radio, Weezer, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Beady Eye) und Malay (Frank Ocean, Lorde, Lykke Li) entstanden 11 Songs, die einerseits packendem, energetischen Indierock wie „Deleter“ und andererseits unter dem Einfluss der zeitgenössischen Chart-Musik stehende Pop-Songs zu bieten haben. Eigentlich ein ideales Album für Fans von Weezer, denn die sind ja Kummer und Alben zwischen Hoffen und Bangen gewohnt.

And while Grouplove are certainly advocating for grassroots social change on Healer, it never gets too heavy or dark. On "Inside Out" they argue the adage that real change comes from within, a sentiment given added punch by a bass-heavy, post-punk groove. Similarly, "The Great Unknown" is a song about the golden possibilities of humanity, set to a chugging, midtempo riff that's equal parts the Cars and Weezer. Part of the joy of the album is hearing the group's ability to filter some of their concerns over issues like right-wing populism and global ecological disasters through a positive-minded and often surrealistic prism. On "Hail to the Queen," Zucconi sings "What if you had the notion/We'd all get swallowed in ocean/I'd tell you what I'd do if I were you/I'd summon all the whales/And ride upon their tails/Together we could sail under the moon." With Healer, Grouplove have made an album about how we need to support each other during tough times, and never give up on the hope for a fantastical future. As they sing on "Hail to the Queen," "Don't Need to be stressed out, or left out, we're with you.“
