Phildel - Wave Your Flags

Phildel's prodigious talent as a neo-classical composer and arranger have no doubt helped shape the sound of her current material. The songs are self assured with a cohesive production that flows throughout the eleven-track album. Her forte (No pun intended) as a contemporary pianist elevates her compositions and arrangement beyond the norm. Her understanding and use of classical techniques to enhance each score gives these songs that little something extra. There are no jarring moments, only exquisite music and angelic vocals.

From the opening bars of The Deep is it clear that Wave Your Flags is a near perfect album, sounds and voices are positioned and timed with a clinical precision, each syllable is sung with seeming ease and every sound fits snugly to its counterpart. With songs of fissure and healing, Wave Your Flags is powerful yet gentle, therapeutic and provoking.
Lead single, Electric Heights is gloriously empty. A void filled with wisps of vocal accompaniment, snitches of sound and well placed echoes creating a great expanse of calm and warm feeling. Oh Love expresses her gratitude at the support from Chris after she imagined turning herself into the Thames expressed in The Great Wave. (…)
Phildel is a huge star in the waiting, doing things her way, in her time and on her rules, make no mistake, she is an enormous talent.

Each song seems to represent a different chapter or short snippet of her life and experiences, and Phildel expertly weaves this into her music not only through the lyrical content, but also in the choice of soundscapes. Every song has a different and refreshing vibe, showing us eleven different sides of the artist throughout the album.
Wave Your Flags is just exceptional – a welcome surprise in the first half of 2019 and, for me personally, it will be tough for any releases this year to top it any time soon. If you’ve stumbled upon this article by chance and not due to Phildel fandom, do yourself a favour – introduce yourself to Wave Your Flags, it’s a hell of a journey.
