The Leisure Society - Arrivals & Departures

Zu Zeiten von „The Fine Art Of Hanging On“ (2015) war die Welt von Nick Hemming, dem kreativen Kopf hinter The Leisure Society, noch in Ordnung. Doch im Verlauf der Promotion für das vierte Album der Band zerbröselte langsam die Beziehung zu Helen Whitaker, die gleichzeitig Flötistin der Leisure Society war. Hemming zog aus der gemeinsamen Wohnung in Brighton aus und zog von einer vorübergehend Unterkunft zur nächsten und verarbeitete die Trennung in Songs und Demoaufnahmen, die zu „Arrivals & Departures“ wurden. Ob unter seinen Freunden, auf deren Sofas er über Monate hinweg nächtigte, auch Brian Eno gehörte, ist nicht überliefert, aber dennoch ist der Musiker in das Doppelalbum involviert („I'll Pay for It Now“), das 10 Jahre nach der ersten Single („The Land Of The Melting Snow“) von The Leisure Society erschienen ist.  

Wie bei „Love + Fear“, dem gestern vorgestellten Album von Marina, ist auch „Arrivals & Departures in zwei Platten unterteilt, die jeweils 8 Songs anbieten. Die zweite Hälfte zeigt The Leisure Society von ihrer experimentelleren Seite und sorgt dafür, dass auf dem 56-minütigen Flug keine Langeweile aufkommt. „Arrivals & Departures“ darf mit den Etiketten „Folkpop“, „Kammerpop“ und „wundervolles Album“ beklebt werden und dürfte Freunde zwischen Loch Lomond, The Divine Comedy, Father John Misty oder Grizzly Bear für sich begeistern können. 

The two sides of Arrivals & Departures are defined as a double album by the band, and could quite easily have been put out as two seperate releases. This isn’t a bloated session with a knife arbitrarily splitting it apart. The clear thematic and aesthetic differences make for two isolated wholes which work even better when sat next to one another. It is for this reason that Arrivals & Departures (which could have alternatively been titled Loss & Anger) is the most ambitious Leisure Society record to date – and the most accomplished.

Listening to Arrivals & Departures, the fifth and a double album from The Leisure Society, the first one-word description that comes to mind is ‘pastoral’. That is if you only pay attention to the music. So it is no wonder that one point in the band’s career they were approached by a certain Ray Davies to collaborate on music together, and that another certain, Brian Eno has a hand in this album. (…)
What we get is a lush, melodic album with some dark overtones that blend easily with the music. So maybe that one-word description could be turned into a two-word one: ‘dark pastoral”. (…)
Based on the evidence of Arrivals & Departures, The Leisure Society deserve both - the critical praise and public acceptance. I hope they get it.
