10 Fakten zum neuen Album von The Vaccines:

1. Die Abstände zwischen den einzelnen Alben von The Vaccines nehmen zu: Lagen zwischen „What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?“ und „Come Of Age“ nur 18 Monate und vergingen bis „English Graffiti“ 32 Monate, so mussten Fans auf die vierte Platte nun 34 Monate warten. 

2. „Combat Sports“ ist seit dem 30. März als Download, CD, Kassette und LP erhältlich. Schallplattenfans können zwischen schwarzem und orangenem (limitiert) Vinyl wählen.

3. Bonus-Tracks auf limitierten Versionen, wie bei den drei vorherigen Alben, gibt es bei „Combat Sports“ nicht. Dabei verkündete die Band bereits Ende 2016: "We’ve got most of the record written, actually. We’ve got like twenty songs – I don’t know how many of them are gonna end up being Vaccines songs. I think we’ll just record in the new year and see what happens!” 

Passiert ist, dass insgesamt 11 Songs für das neue Album, das 32 Minuten läuft, ausgesucht wurden. Gerüchteweise sollen am Ende der Aufnahmen sogar rund 80 Songs zur Auswahl gestanden haben.

4. Das Album wurde gemeinsam mit Ross Orton, der gemeinsam mit Steve Mackey von Pulp das Songwriter/Produzenten Team Caveman gegründet hat und bereits mit Arctic Monkeys, M.I.A. oder The Fall zusammenarbeitete, in Sheffield aufgenommen.

5. Personalwechsel bei The Vaccines: Schlagzeuger Pete Robertson hat die Band im Juni 2016 verlassen. Aber Justin Hayward-Young (Gesang), Freddie Cowan (Gitarre) und Árni Árnason (Bass) machen nicht als Trio weiter, sondern nehmen sowohl Yoann Intonti (Schlagzeug) als auch den Tour-Keyboarder Timothy Lanham neu in die Band auf. 

6. Als The Vaccines im Januar 2018 ihre erste neue Single, „I Can Quit“, veröffentlichten, gab es im Guardian folgenden bösen Kommentar zu lesen: "I see The Vaccines have released their song again."

Der größte Single-Erfolg der Band war 2011 „Post Break-Up Sex“, das Platz 32 im Vereinigten Königreich erreichte. Die ersten beiden Singles aus dem letzten Album, „Handsome“ und „Dream Lover“, kamen zumindest noch bis auf die Plätze 74 bzw. 155. „I Can Quit“, „Nightclub“, „Put It On A T-Shirt“, „Surfing In The Sky“ und „Your Love Is My Favourite Band“ verfehlten bisher die Charts.

7. Auf „Combat Sports“ gib es 11 Gitarrensoli zu hören.

8. Der Albumtitel, so lautet die Geschichte, begründet sich durch eine Prügelei zwischen Justin Hayward-Young und Freddie Cowan am letzten Aufnahmetag: “We’re like brothers. And brothers fight. I don’t see the title as a negative. On the contrary, to me it embodies survival, strength, commitment, glory, winning. We’re not just saying being in a band and making a record feels like a combat sport – we know how lucky we are. If you listen to the lyrics, we’re saying life is a combat sport. Love is a combat sport. Friendship is a combat sport. Mental health is a combat sport. But there is so much hope and positivity in the melody, and in our love affair with music, too.”

9. Laut Metacritic ist „Combat Sports“ mit aktuell 78/100 Punkten das stärkste Album von The Vaccines. Zuvor gab es: „English Graffiti“ (2015) 73/100,  „Come Of Age“ (2012) 66/100 und „What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?“ (2011) 67/100 Punkten.

Combat Sports reaffirms The Vaccines as one of the most exciting British bands around--and one absolutely still worth pestering friends about.

10. The Vaccines haben bisher noch keine Tournee durch Deutschland bestätigt, werden aber zweimal im Vorprogramm von Die Toten Hosen (24./25.05.18 in Essen) sowie beim Southside und Hurricane Festival (22./23.06.18) live auftreten.
