In der scheinbar niemals enden wollenden Serie „Comebacks, auf die die Welt gewartet hat, oder?“ werfen hier heute einen Blick nach Nordirland, denn dort gründete sich 1984 die Band The Adventures. Zu ihr gehörten der Sänger Terry Sharpe und der Gitarrist Pat Gribben, die bereits Jahre zuvor gemeinsam in der Band The Starjets musizierten, sowie Gribbens Ehefrau Eileen (Gesang, Geige), Gerard Murphy (Gitarre), Tony Ayre (Bass) und Paul Crowder (Schlagzeug).
In Deutschland gelang ihnen mit ihrer zweiten Single, dem wundervollen „Send My Heart“, ein kleiner Hit (#24) und vier Jahre später sollte auch „Drowning In The Sea Of Love“ zu Chartehren kommen (#53), im Vereinigten Königreich gelang 1988 mit „Broken Land“ einmal der Einzug in die Top 40 (#20).
Das Debütalbum „Theodore And Friends“ (1985) verpasste die Charts und sorgte für einen Wechsel des Plattenlabels. Aufgrund des kleinen Hits im Vereinigten Königreich konnte der Nachfolger „The Sea Of Love“ dort Platz 30 erreichen. Während es „Trading Secrets With The Moon“ zwei Jahre später noch auf Rang 64 schaffte, sorgte der Misserfolg von „Lions and Tigers and Bears“ (erneut bei einem weiteren Label) für die Auflösung der Band. Nach 2007 spielten The Adventures einige wenige Konzerte und mussten 2009 den Tod ihres Bassisten Tony Ayre verkraften.
Als Trio kehren Terry Sharpe, Pat Gribben und Eileen Gribben nun wieder mit ihrem fünften Studioalbum, das 32 Jahre nach ihrer letzten Platte erscheint, zurück. „Once More With Feeling“ bietet 10 abwechslungsreiche Songs und wurde (nur auf CD) via Cherry Red Records veröffentlicht: Gleich mit den ersten drei Songs decken The Adventures Synthpop („My Imaginary Girlfriend“), Rock („With The Cats“) und Country-Pop („When The Sun Goes Down“) ab. Die Singstimme von Terry Sharpe ist deutlich knarziger geworden, Eileen Gribbens Hintergrundgesang gleicht dies oftmals aus. Auf dem Folkpop-Song „L.U.C.Y.“ darf sie auch erstmals als Leadsängerin fungieren. Den Song schrieb Pat Gribben mit der erfolgreichen Komponistin Cathy Dennis - und zwar ursprünglich für S Club 7! „The Hanging Tree“ ist folkiger Rock’n’Roll und beatlesque wird es beim abschließenden „To Whom It Concerns“.
And when the album starts with the upbeat ‘My Imaginary Girlfriend’, those last three decades fall away and reveal a revitalised outfit. Sharpe’s vocals have a slightly more lived-in feel these days than the almost angelic sound of those 80s and 90s days, but he can still soar like the best of them. (…)With The Cats’ is another highlight and has a really Summery Beach Boys feel (…). The key changes at the end are lovely, and knowing from the sleeve notes that the album was born in lockdown, the lyrics potentially point to that odd time (“Me and you / In the back yard / With the cats / All that Summer me and you”). ‘When The Sun Goes Down’ is another faster-than-usual one for them, built around Gribben’s acoustic guitar and those backing vocals again apply a sweetness to the sound. ‘Love Talk’ is another track that sounds like a single – they actually all do – and keeps with the more uptempo feel of the record.For me, the band’s forte is in sparkling, sophisticated pop music – it’s still staggering that singles like ‘Feel The Raindrops’ and ‘Send My Heart’ from 1985’s wonderful debut Theodore and Friends weren’t massive hits (in the same way that Prefab Sprout, Talk Talk and The Blue Nile routinely missed the Top 40 around the same time with classic songs), and Once More With Feeling has a lot of those great, classic Adventures moments.

Hach, "Send My Heart" ist so ein Song, den ich über die Jahre komplett vergessen hab. Schön, dass du ihn mit in die Vorstellung eingebaut hast. Und mit "My Imaginary Girlfriend" fängt das neue Album ja auch sehr vielversprechend an. Insgesamt komme ich aber leider nur auf 5,5 Punkte.
