Bess Atwell - Light Sleeper

Personalien:

Bess Atwell heißt eigentlich Bess Hildick-Smith und ist eine aus Brighton stammende Singer/Songwriterin, die - noch mit dunklen Haaren - die Alben „Hold Your Mind“ (2016) und „Already, Always“ (2021) veröffentlicht hat.

Tathergang:

Im Mai 2023 erfolgte bei ihr, nachdem sie Antidepressiva abgesetzt hatte, eine Diagnose für das Autismus-Spektrum- Syndrom, was für sie persönlich und künstlerisch eine Welle der Bestätigung mit sich brachte. Einen großen Anteil an der musikalischen Feinjustierung trägt auch ihr Produzent Aaron Dessner, in dessen abgelegenem Hüttenstudio Long Pond im Hudson Valley die 10 Songs von „Light Sleeper“ entstanden.

Das dritte Album von Bess Atwell ist als CD und LP (black Vinyl, transparent pink Vinyl, transparent green Vinyl) erhältlich, die auf 350 Exemplare limitierte Auflage bei Blood Records gibt es als yellow/gold colour-in-colour Vinyl.

Warmer, verträumter Folk, der in Zusammenarbeit mit Aaron Dessner entstanden ist - das lässt einen doch an einen bekannten Popstar denken, oder? Wer nicht ganz so dick auftragen möchte, der könnte „Light Sleeper“ auch Freunden von Laura Marling oder Fenne Lily empfehlen. 

Zeugen:

On a surface level, the melancholy strum of a slow acoustic guitar can come across as another translator for yet more sad songs, yet Atwell tenderly works on herself beneath its topline, where more complexities also lie, refusing to change for the acceptance of others on tracks such as the steadily-paced "Fan Favourite", even taking on crunchy guitars in "Release Myself" for a change in pace. Little additional musicianship is required apart from the flutters of light strings or synth lines.

The result is a record which combines her distinctive lyrical skill with new sonic themes. (…) Some may say Atwell could have opened up further, but there’s no doubt this is an album of depth which deserves repeat listens and which will be loved by her fans as well as enjoyed by newcomers.
