Camera Obscura - Look To The East, Look To The West

Es gibt zwei Gründe, um dankbar tief durchzuatmen: 1. ist mit „Look To The East, Look To The West“ nach mehr als einer Dekade ein neues Album von Camera Obscura erschienen und 2. ist der Country-Pop der Vorab-Single „Big Love“ nicht stellvertretend für das Album. 

Als Highlights der 11 Songs würde ich zurzeit „We’re Going To Make It In A Man’s World“, leichtfüßiger Indiepop mit Retro-Charme, sowie „Sleepwalking“, eine wundervolle Piano-Ballade, und den ausladend instrumentierten Titelsong benennen. „Denon“ und „Pop Goes Pop“ könnten auch gut von Belle & Sebastian stammen. Wer gefallen an die Countyfiezierung von Camera Obscura gefunden hat, der wird sich besonders an „The Light Nights“ erfreuen.

Nach dem Tod von Carey Lauder, der auf dem Album in Form des anrührenden „Sugar Almond“ gedacht wird, im Jahr 2015 hing die Zukunft von Camera Obscura für mehrere Jahre in der Schwebe. Tracyanne Campbell konzentrierte sich zunächst auf ihr Projekt Tracyanne & Danny (zusammen mit Danny Coughlan,) und erst auf Einladung von Belle & Sebastian zu dem von ihnen veranstalteten „Boaty Weekender“ Festival fand die Band wieder für Live Auftritte zusammen. Eine B-Seiten-, Raritäten- und Coverversionen-Sammlung namens „Making Money“ zum Record Store Day 2022 überbrückte dann die Zeit ohne neue Veröffentlichung der Glasgower Band sowie die wegen der COVID-19-Pandemie verschobenen Aufnahmen zum sechsten Studioalbum von Camera Obscura. 

„Look To The East, Look To The West“ entstand zusammen mit dem finnischen Produzenten Jari Haapalainen, der auch schon für „Let's Get Out of This Country“ (2006) und „My Maudlin Career“ (2009) mit Camera Obscura arbeitete, und ist als CD und LP (black Vinyl, Baby blue & white Galacy Vinyl) erschienen.

Lander's passing looms large on the album, and the penultimate track "Sugar Almond" is a nod to her absence and enduring legacy. The song's simple composition highlights Campbell's heartbreaking lyrics: "I liked who we were together / I'm not sure who I'll be apart / I will love you forever and ever." It's a haunting rumination on loss and a beautiful tribute to the indelible mark love leaves on another person. Listening to Look to the East, Look to the West feels at once redemptive and healing; Camera Obscura have found their way through the dark. As Campbell surmises on the final track: "In a strange kind of way / Life, it goes on and on.“

Campbell sounds as wistful and moonstruck as ever. Her voice wavers between fragile confidence and haughty longing on opener “Liberty Print,” which scrolls by like an indie-pop Jane Austen gala. Campbell offers a languid sense of determination on “We’re Going to Make It in a Man’s World,” where atmospheric synthesizers drift past the wordless vocals that carry the song. Elsewhere, on “Sugar Almond,” she simply sounds sad. The song is an elegy for Lander, and the minor-key piano part and Campbell’s aching vocal hint at the wrenching depths of losing a bandmate and, more importantly, a friend. It’s no small thing that Camera Obscura found their way back from that—not every band could (or should). It turns out that subtlety suits them, and if Look to the East, Look to the West isn’t as immediately grabby as past albums were, these songs are nonetheless built to last.
