James - Yummy

Mal sehen, wie den Plattenrichtern „Yummy“, das 18. Album von James, mundet…

Viele Köche verderben den Brei, heißt es, aber auf die - mit einer kurzen Unterbrechung - seit 1982 bestehende Band aus Manchester scheint dies nicht zuzutreffen, denn aktuell versammeln sich gleich 9 Musiker und Musikerinnen um den Herd, im Studio  und auf der Konzertbühne. Mit „Is This Love“, „Life’s A Fucking Miracle“ und „Our World“ kredenzen sie uns die gewohnt leichtfüßig-tanzbaren und eingängigen Singles. Besonders deliziös sind das über 6-minütige, opulente „Shadow Of A Giant“ und „Way Over Your Head“ geraten. 

Zum Nachtisch servieren James „Pudding“, 12 Songs (auf der Doppel-CD Deluxe Version) in Demo-Versionen, die es nicht in den endgültigen Aufnahmeprozess mit der kompletten Band geschafft haben.  

Werden die Hoffnungen von Tim Booth & Co. auf eine erneute Top-Platzierung bei Platten vor Gericht („All The Colours Of You“ landete zuletzt auf Platz 4) schmelzen wie das Wassereis in der Sonne oder entfaltet „Yummy“ seine schillernden Flügel und schwingt sich in noch höhere Endstand-Welten empor?

Yummy is the sound of a band refusing to rest on their laurels, in love with their creative process and looking forward rather than backwards. James still possess the ability to produce the anthems with which they made their name, and Yummy has moments where they hit that sweet spot, but across the twelve songs here they’re searching for deeper connections, both internally within the band and with their audience. Their expansion to a nine-piece has opened up new possibilities, particularly vocally with Alper on board, and that allows them to make a James record that sounds like a James record, but not like one they’ve made before.
