David Kitt - Idiot Check

Seit 2000 veröffentlicht der irische Singer/Songwriter David Kitt Musik, seit 2001, als ich ihn im Vorprogramm der Tindersticks sah, bin ich Fan. 

Und auch wenn David Kitt mit „Idiot Check“ auf summa summarum 10 Veröffentlichungen kommt, finden sich gleiche mehrere Titel, die ich für ein Mixtape mit meinen Lieblingsliedern von ihm auswählen würde: „Wishing Well“, das aufgrund seiner Melodie, den warmen Keyboard-Klängen und den immer wiederkehrenden „Störgeräuschen“ einen regelrecht hypnotischen Sog entfacht. Das getragene, an die Tindersticks erinnernde „All Folly“, auf dem Kitt mehr raunt als singt (und das teilweise auf Gälisch) und für das er die kanadische Sängerin Mary Margaret O’Hara als Gast gewinnen konnte. Außerdem würde ich „Till The End“ auswählen, das wohl das Ende seiner letzten Beziehung theamtisiert, als er seiner Freundin nach Australien folgen wollte, die Pandemie aber ihre Pläne durchkreuzte und irgendwie auch die Beziehung beendete. Hier besticht Katie Kims verschachtelter Gesang und setzt sich das geflüsterte und Kitts Aussagen untermauernde „I’ll be with you til the end“ sehr schnell bei mir fest.

Von Katie Kim (auf sechs Songs) und Margie Jean Lewis („Wave Of Peace“) erhält David Kitt auf zahlreichen weiteren Liedern von „Idiot Check“ weibliche Gesangsunterstützung. Dennoch entstand das Album nahezu im Alleingang: Kitts Kompositionsanfänge reichen bis ins Jahr 2016 zurück, er spielte nahezu alle Instrumente selbst ein, nahm diese in Dublin, Paris und seinem neuen Wohnort Ballinskelligs an der irischen Westküste auf und produzierte das Album selbst. 

„Idiot Check“ bietet zehn Folktronic-Songs, bei denen „Leave Me Making“ und „Wave Of Peace“, auf dem er „Into The Breeze“ von seinem Debütalbum zitiert, das Spektrum zwischen elektronisch und entspannt-folkig begrenzen. 

Das Album ist als CD, Kassette und LP (black Vinyl, silver Vinyl) erhältlich.

With typical eclecticism, he takes in electro-soul on ‘Not So Soon’; Townes Van Zandt-style lyricism on ‘Wexford Strawberries’; space ambient on ‘Till The End’; and surf-rock on ‘Wave Of Peace’.

Goth-folk effort ‘All Folly’ remarkably features the spooky vocals of fellow Tindersticks alumnus Mary Margaret O’Hara, an artist as enthralling as she is elusive. The wonderful Katie Kim also features on several tracks, reaching for perfection on ‘It’s In Some of Us’ – a song that is pure Kittser, careening fantastically from acoustic to electronic, serene to turbulent.

`Idiot Check` is a wonderfully absorbing listen with passages that are ambient and atmospheric but also has a real blend of electronic experimentalism. The choice of guests in Dylan Lynch and Mary Margaret O’Hara added a certain something to the numbers they graced while, for me, singer Katie Kim was the real highlight. She added such gracefulness to the singer`s own deeply rich vocals.

This album will overtake your life if you`re not careful and Mr Kitt will be trekking around the UK and Ireland from early next month where i`m sure a number of these cuts will be well received.
