Just Mustard - Heart Under

Das irische Quintett Just Mustard veröffentlichte 2018 sein Debütalbum „Wednesday“ über das in ihrer Heimatstadt Dundalk angesiedelte Indie-Label Pizza Pizza Records. Das Album wurde anschließend für den Choice Music Prize in Irland nominiert, so dass Partisan Records (Fontaines D.C., IDLES, Laura Marling, Cigarettes After Sex) aufmerksam wurden und die Band 2020 unter Vertrag nahmen. Während der Pandemie entstand der 10 Song starke Nachfolger „Heart Under“, der auf CD, Kassette und LP erhältlich ist. Die limitierten Auflagen der Schallplatte gibt es auf blue Vinyl bzw. transparent blue Vinyl.

„Heart Under“ ist schwer zu fassen: Shoegaze trifft Industrial Sounds, Dreampop im Post-Punk Gewand? Der Opener „23“ zeigt sich gleich so kühl, einschneidend und metallisch wie Sigur Rós auf ihrem letzten Album „Kveikur“, was vor allem der Arbeit und Experimentierfreude der beiden Gitarristen David Noonan und Mete Kalyon geschuldet ist, die ihren Instrumenten immer wieder höchst ungewöhnliche, atmosphärische Klänge entlocken. Der klare, sirenenhafte Gesang von Katie Ball darf ebenfalls als ausgefallen bezeichnet werden, so dass einem hier auch Cranes oder Curve in den Sinn kommen können. Das Lineup wird von der Rhythmusgruppe, bestehend aus Rob Clarke (Bass) und Shane Maguire (Schlagzeug), komplettiert, welche die Grundlage legen und dabei helfen, den klassischen Rock-Song zu fragmentieren, so dass beispielsweise Refrains schwer zu finden sind und sich „Heart Under“ - ähnlich wie „Pornography“ von The Cure - langsam, düster und unaufhaltsam dahin wälzt.    

Auf den Inseln jenseits des Ärmelkanals sind zumindest die Kritiker total aus dem Häuschen: „Heart Under“ steht bei Metacritic aktuell bei 91/100 Punkten.

 

The opening track, 23, kicks the album off like a murder mystery novel set at an eccentric aristocrat’s countrypile: warm and reassuring at first, before descending into madness, the path mirrored by singer Katie Ball’s dreamily atmospheric vocals that are paired with clanging instruments. Blue Chalk and Mirrors continue that messy ethereality, while Seed takes things up a notch with techno synths and a wailing bridge that were made for the live stage. I Am You is an angsty feminine anthem focused on fruitless efforts ("Change my hair / Change my dress / Change my head") to fit in. 

The difficult landscape for young artists dreaming of ‘making it’ – studio time is getting increasingly expensive, Brexit has tied international shows in red tape and labels prioritise going viral on TikTok over originality – renders it unsurprising that, in rock at least, it’s easier to create digestible Noughties-style indie than guitar music that is purposefully uncommercial. But Just Mustard don’t care, and choose the more difficult option anyway.

Swampy and tumultuous like a month’s worth of rain, the Dundalk five-piece have spared no expense in creating immersive, cavernous spaces of shoegazing, post-punk splendour. ‘I Am You’’s nightmarish beauty, the near perfect stillness of ‘Blue Chalk’, or the crash-bang gushes of ‘In Shade’ stand out as among the album’s finest examples of Just Mustard’s mastery of tension and time. Haunted throughout by screeching guitars - sounding as much like screaming underground trains as guitars - sinewy basslines and stony drum textures, cutting divinely though it all are Katie Ball’s intimate vocal displays. Her sky-searing voice, matched with a seductively elliptic lyrical bite, offers a blinking light of human purity within such guttural and grimacing industrial soundscapes. Honing the epic of ‘Disintegration’-era Cure, during the Bloodiest of Valentines ‘Heart Under’ snugs right into that stream of dissonant rock currently emerging from the Emerald Isle - Gilla Band and tour buddies Fontaines DC among them. And isn’t the world a better place for it?
