The Great Leap Forward - Revolt Against An Age Of Plenty

Ein Albumtitel wie dem Manic Street Preachers-Albumtitelgenerator entsprungen: „Revolt Against An Age Of Plenty“ erschien wenige Wochen vor „The Ultra Vivid Lament“, dem vierzehnten Album der Waliser, die damit zum zweiten mal die Spitze der UK Charts erreichen konnten. Fans der Manic Street Preachers hätten auch direkt die Platte von The Great Leap Forward mit zur Kasse nehmen können, da sie musikalisch und textlich ähnliche Wege einschlägt und etwas mehr Beachtung erhalten hätte.

Aber es gibt noch weitere Verbindungen zu entdecken, denn Alan Brown, dessen Solo-Projekt The Great Leap Forward darstellt, war Anfang der 80er Jahre Sänger und Gitarrist der Post Punk/Indie Rock-Band Big Flame (oder auch bIG*fLAME), die großen Einfluss auf die Manic Street Preachers hatte. Dazu ein Zitat von Richie Edwards aus dem Jahr 1991, also Big Flame, die nie ein Album veröffentlichten, schon wieder 5 Jahre Geschichte waren: 

"The 80s, for us, was the biggest non-event ever, like C86. All we had was Big Flame. Big Flame was the most perfect band. But we couldn't play their records 'cos they were too avant garde.“

Aber auch The Great Leap Forward hinterließen Eindruck, denn James Dean Bradfield wählte nicht nur „Why Pop Stars Can’t Dance“ (Big Flame) in seine „C86 Top Ten“ sondern auch deren „Great Leap Forward“ EP. Hier sollte aber mit „Don’t be Afraid Of Change…“ tatsächlich 1988 auch ein Album folgen. Mittlerweile sind es, nachdem Alan Brown eine jahrelange Auszeit vom Musikbusiness nahm, deren vier.
