James Walsh - Small Illusions

Obwohl seine Band Starsailor seit ihrem 2017er Album „All This Life“ und der anschließenden Tour ruht, ist James Walsh nicht untätig: 2019 erschien sein drittes Soloalbum „Tiger On The Bridge“, welchem er zwei EPs mit jeweils 5 Songs folgen ließ („The Quiet Ones“ (2019) und „The Places Where Our Love Begun“ (2020). Und nun ist mit „Small Illusions“ recht überraschend ein weiteres Soloalbum erschienen (Download oder CD).

Wie viele andere Musiker auch, hat James Walsh im letzten Jahr häufig vor einer Kamera Platz genommen und sich Zuhause beim Nachspielen seiner Lieblingssongs aufgenommen: „Road To Nowhere“ (Talking Heads), „Golden Slumbers“ (The Beatles), „Time After Time“ (Cyndi Lauper), „Drive“ (The Cars), „The One I Love“ (R.E.M.) und und und - zu hören in sehr schlichten Versionen bei YouTube, vorgetragen nur mit seiner außergewöhnlichen Stimme und der akustischen Gitarre. 

Dies mag auch der Ursprung von „Small Illusions“ gewesen sein, denn auch seine zehn eigenen Songs hat Walsh in äußerst reduzierten Arrangements aufgenommen. Aufgrund seiner Kürze (knapp 27 Minuten), einiger starker Songs („The Greatest Story Ever Told“, „My Heart“) und dezenter Variationen (Pfeifen auf „Waiting For Your Kiss“, Falsettgesang („Lost Letters“, „Waiting For Your Kiss“) oder Pianobegleitung („The Weight Of Expectation“, „My Heart“) ist „Small Illusions“ recht kurzweilig geraten. Von „My Heart“ hätte ich mir tatsächlich diese A Capella-Version mit Chorgesang auf dem Album gewünscht.

 

Perhaps the greatest compliment I can pay James is that listening to Small Illusions I was reminded of the third and final album by the ethereal and amazing, but ultimately tragic, Nick Drake. Whereas Drake’s first album, Five Leaves Left, were accompanied by lush and beautiful strings arrangements by Robert Kirby, Pink Moon was just Drake, his guitar and the issues Nick had in living the life he was. Like that wonderful but concise album Small Illusions covers many similar themes of loneliness, loss and drifting along in a strange new world without really knowing exactly how normality will be returned to; though in James ’case there is more than just a little optimism in the songs that is joyful to the heart and soul. Small Illusions also has, in it's sumptuous melodies, the ability to hold greater production, maybe in the style of Nick Drake’s debut, should James wish to revisit the album in a future where bands and musicians can record together again. An album of gentle, wonderful and beautiful songs that will help soothe the soul whilst allowing all the small illusions that feed and inspire us all to start to come true.
