Summer Camp - Romantic Comedy

Ein Fußballspiel im Stadion sehen, ein Konzert besuchen, Schüler in einem überfüllten Klassenzimmer unterrichten… Was man am Valentinstag noch alles machen konnte!

Oder in den Plattenladen gehen und sich „Romantic Comedy“ von Summer Camp kaufen - aber das geht mittlerweile zumindest wieder.

Summer Camp sind die Sängerin Elizabeth Sankey und der Multi-Instrumentalist Jeremy Warmsley und „Romantic Comedy“ ist das erste gemeinsame Album seit fünf Jahren. Und wenn das Plattencover nach einer klassischen Splitscreen-Szene eines Hoollywoodfilms vergangener Jahrzehnte aussieht, dann passt das ganz gut, denn Warmsley komponierte zuletzt u.a. Soundtracks und Sankey drehte eine Dokumentation über romantische Komödien namens, richtig, „Romantic Comedy“. 

Songtitel wie „Dreams Of Love“, „When Danny Met John“, „Mr. Wrong“ oder „It Happened One Night“ lassen erahnen, dass die Lieder entweder aus dem Film stammen oder von diesem inspiriert wurden. Die 15 Songs, darunter einige kurze instrumentale Zwischenspiele, erweitern den typischen Indie-/Synth-Pop von Summer Camp um Ausflüge Richtung Motown, orchestrale Arrangements und teilweise richtigem Band-Sound. 

It might be Summer Camp’s best work yet, with each song dealing with a different aspect of love and eventually why everything is not rainbow and sparkles when it comes to love. Romantic Comedy is anextremelywell-produced album in terms of lyrics, beats and melody, and beautifully pays tribute to and subverts various tropes from romantic comedies throughout pop culture history. It could divide Summer Camp’s fans because of the change from the conventional indie-pop, but the overall change in tune and speed on top of the huge variety on display is a positive direction for the band’s growth.

True to its title, the record affectionately explores every classic romcom staple before gently massaging them into the real world. ‘The Ugly Truth’ has no time for fireworks or love at first sight but keeps the romance all the same, while ‘When Danny Met John’ explores the kind of love and infatuation that lingers for decades. With a keen eye for the little moments that become the bedrock of a relationship, tracks like ‘You Complete Me’ are bound for couples’ playlists the world over. Not afraid to look at what happens when it all goes wrong too, it’s a complete study of love and romance all swept up in some delicious harmonies and bittersweet melodies.
With a series of movie samples and sweet instrumentals tying it back to it’s documentary beginnings, ‘Romantic Comedy’ manages the neat trick of being a stylish accompaniment to that film as well as a perfect standalone concept album. As in love with the concept of real emotion as it is the movie equivalent, it is definitely going to hit Cupid’s target.
