Spearmint - Are You From The Future?

Apropos Night Flowers: Die Macher des Cologne Popfest haben uns in den bisherigen zwei Ausgaben ihres liebevollen Festivals bereits zudem solche Wünsche wir Comet Gain, Throw That Beat In The Garbagecan! oder The Frank And Walters erfüllt. Die nächste Auflage findet am 20. und 21. März 2020 statt und bisher sind Even As We Speak und Pale Lights bestätigt. Hoffentlich haben sie auch mitbekommen, dass Spearmint ein neues Album veröffentlicht haben!

„Are You From The Future?“ führt uns auf den Tanzboden der Indie-Disco („St. Thomas In The Darkness“, „Thomas“), schwelgt in Streichern („Fireflies“, „I Don’t Sleep Well With You“), flirtet mit Disco („24 Hours In A&E“, „Senseless“), exponiert Gitarren („I Met A Boy“) und wird Fans von Lightning Seeds, Belle & Sebastian, Pet Shop Boys und The Go-Betweens verzücken.

Das Einzige, was man Shirley Lee (Gesang, Gitarre), Simon Calnan (Keyboards), James Parsons (Bass) und Ronan Larvor (Schlagzeug) bei „Are You From The Future?“ vorwerfen kann, ist - weil ich sie nämlich verpasst habe - die nur auf 100 Exemplare limitierte LP-Veröffentlichung.

Every song on ‘Are You from The Future?’ is a melodious pop delight: wry observations on politics, love, longing and loss wrapped in glorious cloak of strings and rhythm. Spearmint are a revelation and an institution. I have a sense of regret that I have only now come across this band, and yet a sense of excitement and anticipation at the prospect of discovering their back catalog.

So sure, they still seem to be a (frustratingly) well kept secret. But as someone who receives more albums to review than can possibly be heard or written about, this is one that got played frequently in the runup to writing the review. I’m likely to continue doing so, as it’s one of the best albums of the year…

This is an album that thematically takes in middle age worries, as late stage concerns permeate the no-getting-away-from-fate accompli of ‘It won’t happen to me’ and ‘I don’t sleep well without you’ love songs with a twist.
Wry, spry and arch in all the right ways, always ahead of the curve when it comes to touching a nerve, forever top of the game when amour is the name. Spearmint are back to reclaim the present.
