Kate Tempest - The book of traps and lessons

Spätestens seit Kate Tempests starkem Konzert freute ich mich bereits auf ihr neues Album. Als bekannt wurde, dass Rick Rubin als Produzent fungiert, wurden meine Erwartungen noch ein Stück weiter gesteigert. Vor allem die treibenden Songs der Londonerin hatten mit es bislang angetan. Und Rick Rubin steht u. a. für seine Arbeit mit Run DMC und den Beastie Boys.

Im ersten Moment überraschte mit das neue Album "The book of traps and lessons": Wie auf ihren Album zuvor, erzählt Tempest Geschichten aus ihrem Leben und sie klagt an. Doch während auf "Everybody down" und "Let them eat chaos" im weiteren Sinne noch als Hip Hop-Alben durchgingen, hat sich Kate Tempest nun offensichtlich auf ihre Spoken Word-Wurzeln konzentriert.  Bekanntlich starte sie ihre Karriere bei Poetry Slams. Eigentlich machte Rich Rubin also das, wofür er in den letzten Jahren häufig stand: Reduzieren.

Doch auf dieser Weise kann Tempest ihre Stärke ausspielen. Selbst mit Worten allein gibt sie einen Rhythmus mit, dem sich der geneigte Hörer nicht entziehen kann. Analog zu "Literatur ist Kopfkino" transportiert Kate Tempest Beats allein mit Worten.

Das erkennt auch The Guardian:

By the time, six songs in, Too Late turns out to be entirely spoken word, the absence of any backing barely registers.

She’s moved on lyrically too. Where she previously chronicled the hopes and fears of austerity Britain through the lives of various characters, The Book of Traps... is at once both more personal and more optimistic. She addresses the normally unspoken toxic relationship between love and power, most notably on I Trap You, and the shadow of Brexit looms large. And yet amid the bleakness there are regular countervailing flashes of positivity, never more so than on closer People’s Faces, which over five uplifting minutes takes us from lamenting that “my country’s coming apart” to the observation that “there is so much peace to be found in people’s faces”. It’s a touching end to an always thought-provoking record.

"The book of traps and lessons" wurde in einem Lauf aufgenommen. Und so gehört es auch angehört. Als Highlights nenne ich trotzdem "Keep moving don't move", "Three sided coin", "Holy elixir" und "People's faces".
