Fruit Bats - Gold Past Life

Bei den aktuellen Temperaturen fühlt man sich teilweise auch wie ein Rotwild am Palmenstrand. Und schon sind wir bei „Gold Past Life“, dem aktuellen und achten Album der Fruit Bats angekommen (je nach Zählweise (Mini-, Live-, Soloalben) kann die Anzahl auch etwas variieren). Eric D. Johnson gründete die Band, deren kreativer Kopf und einziges permanentes Mitglied er ist, 1997 und spielte zwischenzeitlich auch Gitarre bei Califone oder The Shins. 

Die musikalisch Reise führt Johnson nicht an einen sonnigen Palmenstrand sondern ist ein nostalgischer Trip zurück in die 70er Jahre. Der Mann mit dem weichen Gesang präsentiert uns entspannten Folkrock, der mal wie eine Mischung aus John Lennon und den Bee Gees klingt („Gold Past Life“) oder einen an Supertramp, Neil Young oder Fleetwood Mac denken lässt. 

Produziert wurde „Gold Past Life von Thom Monahan (Neko Case, Devendra Banhardt, Pernice Brothers, Vetiver) und ist in der limitierten Auflage als aqua-farbenes Vinyl mit zusätzlicher 7’’ mit den Non-Album-Songs „Shane“ und „Getting In A Van Again“ erhältlich. Metacritic steht aktuell bei stolzen 82/100 Punkten 

As good as the album sounds, though — and it sounds especially good on headphones. under the helm of producer Thom Monahan, who’s historically known how to put an atypical sonic spin on acoustic-leaners from Neko Case to Devendra Banhart — it’s as a lyricist where Johnson is really peaking here. There won’t be many albums in 2019 with as many quotable, cut-to-the-marrow lines as this one has.

Nostalgic throughout, yet often more affectionate than bittersweet, Gold Past Life represents another consistently strong set from Johnson, one with melodies and sentiments that linger.

While there are plenty of musical rabbit holes to go down here, there are also some little lyrical nuggets to let us know that Johnson seems to be at least partially aware of the various conceits he is peddling, and that we shouldn't necessarily be overthinking any of this stuff.
